(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ryu Ji-bok = Satellite photos of thousands of people preparing to rehearsal for an upcoming event at Kim Il-sung Square in Pyongyang, North Korea, announced on the 26th (local time).
In this photo, participants formed a formation and made the words’Society Ongwi’ in red Hangul on a white background.
The 38 North viewed the rehearsal as being related to the 8th Labor Party Congress scheduled for January next year.
Political messages such as advocacy are common in these types of events and require practice for timing and accuracy.
38 North said, “At least one parade is expected before and after the Party Congress,” and said that practice scenes have been observed at the Mirim Airfield east of Pyongyang.
38 North said on the 18th that an unknown structure had been detected in Kim Il-sung Square, and said that this temporary structure remained on the west side of the plaza surrounded by a high wall.
He also said that although the purpose of the structure is unclear, rehearsals are taking place in the vicinity.
38 North said a second structure appeared on the east side of the plaza, predicting that this could be the stage for the annual New Year’s Eve event on the night of December 31, which attracts a large crowd in the plaza.
However, he said it was unclear whether this eve event will be held again this year or if this stage is related to the party conference.
