(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Chae Sae-rom = There is a forecast that the domestic smartphone market, which had been contracted by Corona 19 last year, will return to the uptrend again.
According to a market research firm Counterpoint Research on the 14th, shipments of the domestic smartphone market this year are expected to reach 19 million units, an increase of 11% compared to the previous year (17 million units).
It is analyzed that the demand suppressed by Corona 19 last year will increase with the spread of 5G smartphones this year and the emergence of new form factors such as foldable phones and rollable phones.
Counterpoint Research observed that “the promotion of price cuts by domestic mobile carriers will also have a positive effect, and the proportion of 5G smartphones will increase from 49% last year to 87% this year.”
By company, Samsung Electronics is expected to maintain a 65% share of last year’s level by releasing foldables at various price points throughout the year after the release of the Galaxy S21 series.
Apple, which expanded its market share to 21% last year due to the popularity of the iPhone 12 in the domestic market, is expected to increase its market share to 22%. On the other hand, LG Electronics is expected to maintain its market share of 12% this year following 13% last year.
Lee Yun-jung, an analyst at Counterpoint Research, predicted, “Recently, mobile carriers’ movement to cut the price of 5G plans and increased demand for self-sufficient phones will also have a positive impact on the growth of the domestic market.
