As a result of evaluating the safety of 11 types of domestic and foreign cars sold in Korea this year, it was confirmed that the’Genesis G80′ produced and sold by Hyundai Motor Company has the best safety. On the other hand,’Audi Q7′ was ranked 5th, which is the lowest.

Audi Q7, the only lowest rated 5
“Next year, electric vehicles will also be evaluated.”
On the 31st, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the ‘2020 Vehicle Safety Assessment Results’ containing these details. Evaluation targets are ▶K5 (Kia Motors) ▶ Sorento (Kia Motors) ▶ Carnival (Kia Motors) ▶ Trail Blazer (Chevrolet) ▶ Avante (Hyundai Motors) ▶ G80 (Hyundai Motors) ▶ GV80 (Hyundai Motors) ▶ XM3 (Renault Samsung) ▶ Capture (Renault Samsung) ▶A220 (Benz) ▶Q7 (Audi), etc. There are 11 models in total.
The evaluation items were in three areas: collision safety, pedestrian safety, and accident prevention safety. Collision safety is based on eight items, including frontal collision, partial frontal collision, side collision, seat safety, and airbag safety. In addition, the safety of accident prevention evaluates 11 items, including the safety of a rollover and emergency automatic braking system.

As a result, G80 received the highest rating (five stars) in all three items, and also scored 97.3 points (out of 100 points) in the overall score, which was evaluated as the car with the best safety. GV80 and Carnival were tied for second place with 92.5 points.
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the G80 is equipped with an’active hood’ to protect pedestrians, and various advanced safety devices are also installed. The active hood is a device that reduces the impact of a pedestrian by lifting the hood (bonnet) when a collision with a pedestrian is detected to secure a space between the hood and the engine room.
Lee Chang-gi, head of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said, “The trail blazer and the GV80 also had the highest scores in the mid-sized SUV and large SUV, respectively, but they were excluded from the selection of excellent cars because of the recall history.” The trail blazer was recalled due to a defect in the electromagnetic hydraulic brake booster, and the GV80 was recalled due to a lane change assist function and a high pressure pump defect.

Audi Q7, which was the only one among 11 car models in this evaluation, received a score of ‘0’ because the impact applied to the head of a female manikin installed in the rear seat exceeded the upper limit of the injury threshold when evaluating the safety of a frontal collision. For this reason, it recorded the lowest point in the collision safety field, and the overall grade was only 5th grade.
Starting this year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has introduced a new system that gives 0 points when the amount of impact applied to the head, neck, and chest of the human body model exceeds the upper limit during collision evaluation. In the Q7 evaluation, it was confirmed that the shock exceeding the upper limit was applied to the head of the rear seat dummy due to the performance of the rear seat belt.
In the case of the Q7 sold in Europe, a’Pretensioner’ is installed in the rear seat, which is a device that instantly rewinds the seat belt in case of a collision and reduces the width of the passenger’s protruding forward. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained that there is no.

Audi is known to have announced its position to install a pretensioner function in the rear seats of the Q7 sold in Korea during the first half of next year.
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport Motor Policy Officer Yun Jin-hwan said, “In consideration of the increase in the spread of electric vehicles, next year we will select electric vehicles as an evaluation vehicle to evaluate the risk of fire and explosion of the driving battery in the event of a collision, and the risk of high voltage electric shock.
