They said they gave out 100 billion won… Excluding delivery workers

When Coupang was listed on the New York Stock Exchange, it was praised as’Noblesse Oblige’ for distributing stocks to employees. Then, will the platform workers that we often see on the streets who do Coupang delivery days receive stocks?

When I interviewed them, these people were completely missing.

Let’s see reporter Lee Yoo-kyung.

Corporate value up to KRW 55 trillion

One of the secrets to Coupang’s success is a powerful same-day delivery system built nationwide.

In a report filed with the United States, Coupang offered to share the profits with employees.

“Employees are the basis of Coupang and the reason for its success. We will give you a total of KRW 100 billion worth of stock,” he said.

Who will get the stock?

Coupang sent emails to employees.

“You will receive about 2 million won of stock per person,” he wrote.

The target person was also revealed.

“As of March 5 this year, we are coupang and our subsidiary’s delivery staff, regular staff in the distribution center, and regular and contract workers from Levels 1 to 3.”

This means that only employees hired directly by Coupang.

So what about the delivery platform workers: Coupangplex and Coupangitz?

Coupang said they are not employees.

“The Korean government has decided that Coupangplex and Coupangit’s delivery partners are not employees, but independent contractors.”

Coupang argued that on that basis they were free to decide when and where to work.

“If you turn on the app in the free time, you can deliver pocket money”

But the people who actually work are different.

According to a survey by the National Human Rights Commission of Korea, 64% of platform workers like Coupangflax are working full-time.

“It is free in form, but in reality it is difficult to make a living without doing Coupang’s work. Controversy over platform workers.”

Coupang is also aware of this.

In a report filed with the United States, he noted that this issue was “potentially responsible and costly for litigation,” and that it “may adversely affect the company’s business and financial position.”

Coupang’s perception of platform workers was a’risk factor’.
