The Ministry of Education made it clear that this year there will be no postponement of school opening as in last year. Even if the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) increases after the Lunar New Year holidays, it will not change the school opening schedule.

In the announcement of the Ministry of Education’s work plan held at the government’s Sejong Government Complex on the morning of the 26th, Lee Sang-soo, head of the School Innovation Support Division of the Ministry of Education, replied, “Do not delay starting school because the situation changes” to the question, “Are there any delays due to the increase in the number of confirmed patients. Director Lee replied, “We will take measures to ensure predictable academic management by operating remote and school classes appropriately and flexibly.” It means that if the number of confirmed cases increases, the schedule will not be changed even by’opening a LAN line’.

“It’s different from last year… Even if the number of confirmed patients increases, the school opens.”

The Ministry of Education continued to postpone school opening due to the spread of Corona 19 last year, but only opened school online in April. There are many cases where online school openings without sufficient preparation and access to learning sites are not available. However, the Ministry of Education explained that this year, the same mistakes as last year will not be repeated.

“Last year, as Corona 19 was first introduced, we had to take measures related to school before identifying the characteristics of the infectious disease. Unlike last year, when school opening was postponed because it was not possible, the same situation will not occur this year because remote and school classes have been flexibly operated depending on the situation for the past year.”

‘Front school attendance’ is still… Consider the vaccine situation, etc.

The expansion of school attendance will gradually increase with priority to early childhood, lower elementary school, and special schools. Deputy Prime Minister Yu Eun-hye and Minister of Education said, “Full-time attendance should comprehensively review the level of infection risk and vaccination status in the community.” In case the vaccine supply becomes smooth in the second semester, a policy for attending school has not been established. Deputy Prime Minister Yoo said, “Even if vaccination begins, students under the age of 18 are not subject to (vaccination), but we will make a comprehensive consideration of the trend of the spread of local infection, the regional situation of vaccination, and the priority of vaccination for school education workers.” Said.

Yu Eun-hye “School care, it’s not transferred to the local government”

On that day, when the Ministry of Education announced its work plan, a meeting of the Seoul School Non-Regular Workers Conference held a press conference in front of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education asking for improved treatment of caregivers. They argued that “the treatment of dedicated caregivers has not improved and is under pressure for disadvantages of transferring school care to local governments.” They are protesting that it is a plan to transfer care to local governments when the Ministry of Education recently revealed its plan to establish a’school care center’ operated by local governments to respond to the demand for school care.

Regarding this, Deputy Prime Minister Yoo said, “I reiterate, but we have not made a decision to transfer the entire existing school care to the local government, and there is no plan to unilaterally promote the transfer of the local government without consultation with the caring union or the people in the school.”
