In 2024, the world’s largest hydrogen fuel cell power plant will be built in Yanggam-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do.

Hwaseong City signed a business agreement with Korea Western Power Co., Ltd. and Samchully Co., Ltd. for the hydrogen fuel cell power plant construction project on the 26th.

The hydrogen fuel cell power generation business is an eco-friendly power generation business in which hydrogen is extracted from liquefied natural gas (LNG) and chemically reacted with oxygen to generate electricity.

The 80MW-class power plant built in Hwaseong-si is a scale capable of supplying power to about 185,000 households, and has the effect of saving 450,000 tons of carbon dioxide per year compared to thermal power generation.

This project is carried out in such a way that if Hwaseong City provides the municipal land (18,900㎡) in Yanggam-myeon as the project site, Korea Western Power will build a power plant and Samchully will supply city gas.

Korea Western Power will cover half of the total project cost invested in the project, and the rest will be covered by the SPC (Special Purpose Corporation) to be established in the future.

The city plans to introduce a citizen fund so that citizens can participate in the SPC so that citizens and regions can share the profits obtained from hydrogen power generation.

The city predicted that this project will have the effect of increasing tax revenue of 70 billion won over 20 years, creating 700 jobs, and eliminating areas that do not supply city gas.

Hwaseong Mayor Seo Cheol-mo said, “Hydrogen fuel cell power generation is an eco-friendly future energy that is more efficient than thermal power generation and significantly reduces carbon generation.” It will also contribute to welfare,” he said.
