Reuters reported on the 24th (local time) that the U.S. plans to sanction two more companies targeting the Myanmar military, which suffered many casualties while suppressing protests against the coup.

Reuters quoted two sources, saying that the U.S. Treasury Department will announce sanctions on the 25th as soon as the Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC) and the Myanmar Economic Holdings (MEHL), owned by the Myanmar military government, freeze their assets in the U.

The US Treasury Department did not immediately respond to the report.

Earlier, U.S. President Joe Biden froze $1 billion in the name of the Central Bank of Myanmar (about 1.13 trillion won) deposited in the Federal Reserve Bank of New York through an executive order. It has also been put on the list of export restrictions.

Myanmar Army Supreme Commander Min Aung Hlaing, who led the coup, and his family are already on the list of sanctions in the United States, Britain, the European Union (EU) and Canada.

Myanmar’s military ministry controls vast areas of Myanmar’s economy, including beer, tobacco, telecommunications, mining, and real estate through holding companies and subsidiaries.

Accordingly, activists have demanded that governments increase sanctions in the oil and gas sector in order to cut off the lines of money flowing into the military regime.

Myanmar’s military unit again usurped the regime on the 1st of last month in a coup alleging that the government led by state adviser Aung San Suu Kyi held a fraudulent election.

Since then, people protesting the coup in Myanmar have been constantly protesting.

The military and police in Myanmar suppressed the protests against the coup by force, such as firing live ammunition, and it is reported that at least 275 people have died so far.
