A unique incident occurred in which a victim who lost 30 million won by a voice phishing scammer was returned 64 million won after the criminal was caught. This is because the scammer bought bitcoin at the time the virtual currency price skyrocketed.

On the 4th, Dunamu, who operates the cryptocurrency exchange’Upbit’, introduced a case of recovering the damage by discovering an account abused for voice phishing scams with an abnormal transaction detection system.

In November of last year, Upbit caught an account with suspicious deposits and withdrawals. The account’s owner, Mr. A, soon turned out to be a voice phishing scammer. When the victim, who was deceived by Mr. A and deposited 30 million won, reported to the bank, the deposit and withdrawal of the upbit account in the name of Mr. A was already restricted.

Eventually, the bitcoin purchased by Mr. A for 30 million won, which was plucked by voice phishing, was recovered by Upbit. Meanwhile, the price of bitcoin was so high that the value of bitcoin was 64 million won, more than twice the amount of damage. Upbit refunded the entire amount to the victim.

An official from Doona said, “There was an increase in value when the perpetrator traded the won received through voice phishing from Upbit to bitcoin, but it was not a profit of Upbit, so of course it was given to the victim.”

The victim said, “I didn’t expect to get my money back, but the amount converted to bitcoin gave me a profit,” the company said.

Dunamu said, “We are constantly monitoring abnormal transactions, so if we trade profits from crimes such as voice phishing, we have to be discovered.”
