(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Ki-Hoon Kim = After another fire occurred in the Hyundai Kona Electric Vehicle (EV), which was recently recalled (corrective action) due to a series of fires, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport decided to investigate the appropriateness of the recall as well as defects in the vehicle. did.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which has been conducting defect investigations related to the Kona EV fire, is keenly aware that this accident will become a new variable in determining the cause of the fire.

An official from the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said on the 26th that “The Automobile Safety Research Institute, not the National Institute of Scientific Investigation, coordinated with the police the day before to conduct an investigation related to this fire.” .

Earlier, at 4:11 pm on the 23rd of this month, a fire of unknown cause broke out in Kona EV, which was being charged at a public electric vehicle charger installed at a taxi company in Yucheon-dong, Dalseo-gu, Daegu.

Accordingly, the Automobile Safety Research Institute sent employees to the fire site on the 24th, the day after the fire, to conduct a basic investigation, and the Automobile Safety Research Institute decided to conduct an investigation on the vehicle.

In the event of a vehicle fire, it is common for the police and the department to conduct an investigation first.

However, in the case of this fire, it is believed that it may be related to the battery problem, and the Automobile Safety Research Institute, who has been in charge of the Kona EV battery fire investigation, decided to take over the investigation.

The Korea Automobile Safety Research Institute plans to investigate the cause of the fire from various angles without excluding the possibility that the fire was caused by factors other than the battery.

An official of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said, “In automobiles, a fire can occur due to various electrical factors besides batteries,” and “Currently, the cause of the fire cannot be determined as much as the damage condition has been confirmed through field investigations.”

Hyundai Motor recalled 77,000 Kona EVs manufactured from September 2017 to March last year from around the world as the safety controversy spread over the previous Kona EV fires.

The recall was carried out by updating the battery management system (BMS) and immediately replacing the battery if any signs of abnormality in the battery such as excessive cell-to-cell voltage deviation or rapid temperature change were found.

The Kona EV vehicle that caught fire in Daegu this time was confirmed as a vehicle that received a recall.

An official from the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said, “If the cause of the fire in this vehicle is a battery problem, and if the fire does not occur even though the recall program was operated, there may be a possibility of a defect that has not yet been reflected in the recall program.”

The Automobile Safety Research Institute has conducted fire reproducibility tests at Kona EV as seeing that there is a possibility of a fire due to poor battery cell manufacturing of high voltage batteries.

With much of the verification work in progress, there are voices of concern both inside and outside the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport whether this fire will become a new variable.

An official of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said, “We plan to verify the adequacy of the recall plan and take supplementary measures if necessary.”
