According to a survey, the probability of death for corona19 patients with gum disease is about 9 times higher.

Hanyang University Hospital Professor Ji-Young Han presented the results of a case control study on the relationship between periodontitis and Corona 19 infection by Professor Mariano Sanz’s team at the University of Madrid, Spain at a press conference held at the Korea Press Center on the 24th.

The study, released in February, analyzed the relationship between whether they had periodontitis and complications of corona19 infection in data from 568 patients who were confirmed for corona in February-July last year.

According to the results of the study, the probability of death of patients with corona19 with gum disease was about 9 times higher than that of normal people. In addition, they were 3.5 times more likely to be admitted to the intensive care unit and 4.5 times more likely to need a ventilator than patients without gum disease.

Professor Han said, “Corona-related complications occurred in 40 out of 568 patients, and complications were high in patients with moderate to severe periodontitis,” he said. “Therefore, the probability of death was also 8.81 times higher.”

“This may be due to the hypothesis that inhaling periodontal etiology in coronavirus patients increases cytokines,” he said. “This study only revealed that periodontitis may be included as one of the risk factors affecting the outcome of COVID-19 infection. In addition, it is emphasizing the importance of gum health for the prevention and management of corona 19 complications. Recognizing the importance of gum management, you must carefully manage your gums through regular dental checkups.”

Based on the results of this study, Professor Han suggested as the sixth guideline,’brushing your teeth for at least 3 minutes each time’ in addition to the ‘5 key rules for personal quarantine’, which is the basic guideline for keeping a distance in life for the health of the people.

On this day, Professor Jeong Jae-ho of the Department of Respiratory Medicine at the International St. Mary’s Hospital of the Catholic Kwandong University revealed that there may be interactions between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), periodontitis, and Corona 19.

Prof. Jeong mentioned the results of a study on Koreans by a research team at Yonsei University and Ilsan Hospital’s Department of Respiratory Medicine, and said that COPD is a risk factor for death in corona19 patients in Korea.

He said, “As a result of examining the relationship between CDPD and periodontitis and oral health patterns, the frequency of periodontitis was high in COPD patients.” It may have an action.”

Based on these studies, he stressed that keeping the oral cavity healthy should be one of the health guidelines to reduce the risk from COVID-19.

On the morning of this morning, the Korean Academy of Dental Surgery and Dongkuk Pharm held a ’13th Gum Day’ event with the theme of’Oral Health Management in the Corona Era’ at the Korea Press Center. March 24, the’Gum Day’, contains the meaning of’Let’s wear the gums (2) and the body (4) every three (3) months!’

Heung-ju Oh, CEO of Dongkuk Pharmaceutical said, “I think it is meaningful to have a place to explain the relationship between gum disease and Corona 19 when we should not lose our awareness of Corona 19. I will try to further develop the campaign for the day of the year.”
