The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, which is responsible for the new airport project on Gadeok Island, presented a report to the members of the National Assembly’s National Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee earlier this month that the budget for the construction of the new airport reached 28.600 trillion won. According to a government official on the 24th, the report on’Gadeok Airport Report by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’ said, “We are concerned about the violation of our obligations in sincerity when accepting the special legislation in a situation where we are aware of issues such as construction and environment of Gaduk New Airport through the 2016 project feasibility evaluation. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said that the promotion of the new airport project on Gadeokdo Island is “abandonment of duties as a public official,” and “public officials must perform their duties sincerely to seek public interest and prevent disadvantages.”
It included an estimate that the project cost of Gadeok Island’s new airport reached 28.600 billion won, not the 7.5 trillion won originally claimed by Busan. The proposal proposed by the city of Busan is to open only international flights and use Gimhae Airport for domestic flights.
In a report, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said, “Airports such as Tokyo and Montreal, where only international flights were relocated to the outskirts of the city center, failed to operate, and eventually switched to integrated operation. If the transfer system is poor, the status as a gateway airport will decline.” In the case of failures in other countries, Gadeokdo pointed out the feasibility of the new airport project. In addition, he pointed out that in order to create the’Southeastern gateway airport’ claimed by the Democratic Party, military and domestic facilities must also be constructed, and in this case, the project cost will increase significantly.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a review report submitted to the Subcommittee on the Special Act on Gadeok Island on the 19th, “It is common for airports to enact special laws after determining their location after reviewing possible alternatives.”
