From the 5th of this year, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance and the Ministry of Environment will expand and reorganize the support project for early scrapping of old diesel vehicles with grade 5 emissions this year.

This year’s early scrapping support project will be implemented to compensate for restrictions on mobility due to restrictions on the operation of old diesel vehicles such as the fine dust seasonal management system.

The upper limit for early scrapping support will be increased from 3 million won to 6 million won for vehicles that cannot be equipped with exhaust gas reduction devices among those with a total weight of less than 3.5 tons of emission gas class 5, or vehicles owned by livelihoods, commercials, and small business owners.

Considering that most of the old diesel car owners prefer to buy used cars after scrapped cars because of low-income brackets, subsidy of up to 1.8 million won is also paid when purchasing used cars corresponding to the 1st and 2nd emission levels.

Local governments across the country are scheduled to announce plans for early scrapping of vehicles for each local government starting on the 5th, and the Korea Automobile Environment Association will act as an agent for the support project.

Applications for early scrapping support projects can be made by mail fax to local governments and the Automobile Environment Association, or on the automobile emission grade website (emissiongrade.mecar.or.kr).

The Ministry of Environment decided to cooperate with local governments to provide priority support for vehicles caught in the second fine dust seasonal management system, level 5 vehicle operation restrictions in the metropolitan area, as an early scrapping vehicle support project.

During the two months of the 2nd seasonal management system enforcement, 381,172 vehicles were detected in the crackdown on limiting the operation of 5-class vehicles in the metropolitan area, of which 8,925 were found to have participated in low pollution measures.

“We will do our best to support the vulnerable and reduce fine dust emitted from automobiles by smoothly pursuing the improved early scrapping subsidy system,” said Jang Yoon-jung, head of the Employment Environment Budget Division of the Ministry of Technology. Ⓒ Safe Times
