The lowest temperature felt -43℃… Cold wave in China blames Arctic thaw

“The sensory temperature was minus 43℃. Is this a true story?”

In China, as the strongest cold wave hits from the beginning of the new year, Chinese people from all over the world are embarrassed by the severe cold, with certification shots at the lowest temperature and taking various measures against cold weather.

Water was sprinkled around, and the image of frost formation before water vapor could even fall to the ground, apartments with frozen entrances, and photos of people in pain even wearing masks became hot topics. South Koreans in Wangjing, the capital of Beijing’s largest residents’ residence, also urged them to return home quickly by spreading the weather forecast on their mobile phone that showed’the lowest temperature below -19.5℃ and the lowest temperature felt below -43℃’ on the morning of the 7th.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in Beijing was 19.3℃ below zero on February 24, 1969.

In particular, the perceived temperature reminiscent of the North Pole is because the temperature sharply increased in Beijing and the typhoon-class strong winds of 12 to 14 meters per second were blown, making it useless no matter how much clothes were worn.

Excluding not only Beijing, but some southern regions, virtually all of China is experiencing strong cold. The observation point of the Daxinganling Amuer Forestry Bureau in the northern Heilongjiang Province near Siberia recorded a minimum temperature of -44.7℃ on the 5th, which was a seasonally small limit. Urumqi in Xinjiang was cold with an average of -20℃ throughout the week of January.

Why did such a severe cold hit China suddenly? China’s National Climate Center is looking for the cause of the Arctic sea ice problem, predicting that each region in China will set a record low this winter. China’s National Climate Center said, “The polar vortex over the North Pole plays a role in holding onto the cold front, but when the Arctic temperature rises and the sea ice decreases, the vortex weakens, causing the cold front to go south, causing a cold wave.”
