The government decided to stop exporting military supplies to Myanmar, where bloodshed was caused by the military coup, and to review development cooperation projects.

The government announced on the 12th that it has decided to take such a measure, saying, “Despite repeated requests from the international community including Korea, a large number of victims are incurred due to the use of force by the Myanmar military and police authorities.”

The government has decided to stop new exchanges and cooperation with Myanmar in the fields of defense and security.

It also plans to strictly examine the export license of strategic industrial materials. It is known that this includes items that can be used to suppress protests, including tear gas.

In the case of military supplies, there have been no export cases since January 2019, but it has decided not to allow them at all in the future.

It also decided to review the development cooperation project with Myanmar. However, projects and humanitarian projects that are directly connected to the livelihood of Myanmar citizens will continue.

The government said, “By closely consulting with major allies such as the United States and regional and international partners such as ASEAN, we have been closely monitoring the situation in Myanmar and will continue to make efforts to contribute to the restoration process of democracy in Myanmar.”

In particular, the government will continue to review the response plans for various situations, paying special attention to the safety of Korean residents and the protection of enterprises in the market.

In addition, special humanitarian sojourn measures will be implemented so that Myanmarians staying in Korea can stay in Korea until the situation in their country stabilizes.

If Myanmarians, who are difficult to extend their period of stay, wish to continue their stay, it will be temporarily allowed, and Myanmarians who have already reached the end of their period of stay will not be forced to leave the country, and will allow them to voluntarily leave the country after the situation in Myanmar has eased.
