Establishment of’National Technology Strategy Center’ to present investment directions
The Ministry of Science and Technology and Information and Communication said that it held the 9th General Director’s Technology Special Committee on this day and deliberated and decided on the’Material Research and Development (R&D) Investment Innovation Strategy’.
The material R&D investment innovation strategy contained the content of developing customized technologies by selecting key strategic elements that are widely used as high-tech industrial materials like rare earths, but with supply concerns. The main goal is to support minimization of usage, replacement of use, and development of recycling technologies.
It also said that it will secure super-differential competitiveness by developing material technologies in four major fields: mobility, digital innovation, energy, environment, bio and health.
It also includes a content that supports the development of promising materials by strengthening fundamental research on the unique functions and properties of materials, and that a methodology using data and artificial intelligence will be applied to minimize material development trial and error.
In order to strategically invest in material R&D, the government plans to install and operate the'(tentative name) National Technology Strategy Center (NCTS)’, which will serve as a think tank such as establishment of national material R&D investment and policy recommendations.
The government will reflect this investment strategy in the ‘2022 National R&D Investment Directions and Standards (draft)’ in March, and will allocate and adjust the budget from next year’s budget.
Sang-sik Kim, director of the Special Committee on Technology, (Professor of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Korea University) said, “A long-term strategic investment based on industry-academia-research cooperation is essential for securing and commercialization of high-tech materials that are the basis for creating added value in the manufacturing industry.” “We look forward to securing core source technology to lead the future material industry,” he said.
