The government delayed reflecting the power demand of the 4th revolution

[아시아경제 문채석 기자] It is pointed out that the 9th Basic Electric Power Supply and Demand Plan (9th Electric Edition), which contains the domestic electricity supply and demand forecasts and power generation facility plans from this year to 2034, did not properly cover the factors of increasing power consumption such as the 4th Industrial Revolution.

The government held a public hearing on the 9th plan at the KEPCO Art Center in Seocho-gu, Seoul on the 24th. The 9th electricity main includes the removal of Shinhanul nuclear power plants 3 and 4, which had been suspended from construction, from the power supply, and closing 11 of the 24 nuclear power plants currently in operation by 2034.

At a public hearing, it was pointed out at the public hearing that the ninth electricity version had excessively lowered the increase in power demand. The government determined that the average annual growth rate of domestic electricity consumption over the past five years was 1.7%, down from the 2010-2014 average growth rate of 3.9%. It is expected that the domestic electricity consumption will increase by 0.6% on average by 2034.

The problem is that the increased power demand due to the 4th Industrial Revolution was not properly reflected.

Professor Kim Chang-sik, Sungkyunkwan University, chairman of the 9th Electricity Demand Outlook Subcommittee of the 9th Electricity Advisory Organization’Working Group’ said, “We took into account a lot of forecasts related to the 4th industry. “It was very difficult.”

He added, “We concluded that the forecast of the increase and decrease of electric power demand and the maximum electric power demand according to the 4th industry is not explicitly reflected in this 9th electric version, but is reflected in the next supply and demand plan.”

The core of the electricity supply and demand plan is to come up with a forecast for demand, but the contents related to the 4th industrial revolution are not included. This is a concern that has been raised since the working group drafted the 9th full-blown version on May 8th.

Chung Dong-wook, professor of energy system engineering at Chung-Ang University, said, “The big skeleton of the 9th electric version was already erected last year, but it should be seen that the contents of concern at the time were not properly contained, a year or so after the scheduled announcement.” Pointed out.
