The government plans to discover and spread 5G convergence services in earnest. The plan is to take this year as the first year of the creation of the 5G convergence ecosystem and lead to tangible results.
For the full-fledged implementation of 5G services for enterprises, it has established a policy to intensively foster 5G+ innovation projects, 5G specialized networks, and mobile edge computing (MEC)-based services.
On the 26th, the Ministry of Science and ICT held a video conference with the 4th cross-ministerial private-public joint 5G+ strategy committee and discussed ways to build a 5G ecosystem.
Minister of Science and Technology Choi Ki-young said, “In order to lead the global 5G convergence ecosystem market based on the achievements created after the world’s first 5G commercialization, collaboration between the public and private sectors of related ministries is important.” It is a national task that must be successful.”
■ Early establishment of nationwide network…Preparation of roaming plan
It is planned to build the 5G national network by next year. Prior to this, this year, it plans to expand 5G coverage to 85 major administrative buildings, subways, KTX-wide offices, and 4,000 major multi-use facilities.
In particular, it is expected to accelerate the deployment of 5G in rural areas.
The government is planning to prepare a’nonfarm-on-phone 5G roaming plan’ within one minute of this year. This enables shared use of 5G networks between carriers.
It is explained that joint investment is possible in rural areas where investment capacity is insufficient due to low demand for communication services.
Tax support for investment in telecommunications infrastructure is also followed. Integrated investment tax credits, including 5G equipment, are provided for new growth technology commercialization facilities.
In particular, tax credits will be applied to 5G facility investments in overcrowded areas in the metropolitan area, and registration and license taxes will be reduced by 50% for newly constructed 5G wireless networks outside the overcrowded areas.
The tax deduction rate was also 2% in the metropolitan area last year and up to 3% in the non-metropolitan area.
■ Invested KRW 166.5 billion to promote 5G+ innovation projects
This year, KRW 166.5 billion will be invested in 5G+ innovation projects through multi-ministerial collaboration, focusing on the five core 5G services.
First of all, in the field of immersive content, the XR flagship project will be expanded and promoted for construction, education, and national defense, where the application of virtual fusion technology (XR) is great. There are also 50 projects to support the production of XR services related to daily life, such as location-based AR information service and socially underprivileged.
In the field of self-driving cars, in 2027, we will start developing technologies to create the basis for the convergence level 4 commercialization. The Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the National Police Agency will spend 88.8 billion won this year to develop technologies and services to support autonomous driving and improve the legal system.
Promote digital transformation of the manufacturing industry through the advancement of 5G-based smart factories. With the passing of the preliminary feasibility study of the smart manufacturing innovation technology development project, 434.1 billion won will be invested from next year to 2026. Prior to this, this year, it will invest 6.2 billion won in developing platform technology that introduces 5G to food manufacturing and processing processes.
