#. Six people, including Mr. Kim (pseudonym, office worker), recruited participants in their 10s to 20s who will decorate car insurance fraud through social network service (SNS). After riding 4-5 people in a car, they deliberately crashed into a vehicle that illegally changed lanes. Afterwards, it tore out 920 million won for insurance money such as settlement.

In the first half of this year, insurance fraud detection and personnel recorded the highest level ever. False hospitalizations declined due to the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), but single-shot insurance scams such as false disability and diagnosis and livelihood insurance scams surged. Most of the insurance scams caught came from non-life insurance, and long-term non-life insurance and auto insurance scams steadily increased.

According to the Financial Supervisory Service on the 22nd, the amount of insurance fraud detection in the first half of this year was 4526 billion won, a sharp increase of 39.2 billion won (9.5%) from the same period last year. This is the highest level ever. The number of people caught also recorded 44,417, an increase of 4,323 (10%) at the same time.

The most common type of’false/excessive accident’, which distorts the facts of insurance accidents or exaggerates the damage, was 66.4%. This was followed by intentional accidents (14.7%) and damage-related accidents (9%).

False obstacles and false diagnosis increased by 51% (13.7 billion won) and 30.5% (2.7 billion won) respectively from the same period last year. In the same period, administrative claims for hospitals surged 431.6% (11.4 billion won), and repair shop manager claims increased 93.4% (3.2 billion won).

Intentional accidents increased by 28.3% (14.7 billion won), including 40.9% (5.7 billion won) increase in accidental car crashes.

Frauds using non-life insurance accounted for the majority with 92.3% (417.8 billion won). Non-life insurance increased by 12% (44.6 billion won) from the same period last year. In particular, long-term non-life insurance such as injury and quality increased 12.9% (22.4 billion won) and auto insurance 6.4% (11.3 billion won). On the other hand, life insurance was 7.7% (34.8 billion won), down 13.5% from the same period last year.

Looking at the occupational groups caught in fraud, office workers accounted for the most at 18.5%. It was similar to the same period last year, followed by unemployed, daily workers 10.4%, full-time housewives 10.4%, and so on. The number of insurance scams among related professionals such as insurance planners, medical personnel, and automobile maintenance companies has greatly decreased, but the morale of unemployed, daily, and catering workers has increased significantly.

By age, those in their 40s and 50s were the most fraudulent. The percentage of middle-aged people caught was 44.2% (2,958 people). Insurance fraud for youth in their teens and twenties surged 28.3% from the same period last year, and insurance fraud for the elderly in their 60s and above is on the rise to 20.7%.

An official from the Financial Supervisory Service said, “The number of false hospitalizations has decreased due to the Corona 19 pandemic, but single-shot insurance scams have increased, such as false obstacles that are easy to deprive of insurance money.”
