The first fatalities in the U.S. from a mutant virus originating from the UK came out. With mutations from Britain, South Africa, and Brazil all discovered in the United States, there is growing concern that more victims could emerge.

According to Business Insider, health authorities in the state of New Jersey in the United States said on the 27th (local time) that one person infected with the mutant virus from the UK died.

New Jersey State Health Commissioner Judy Persicily told a press conference today that the mutant infected person who died this time had a serious underlying disease.

Commissioner Persicily emphasized, “Because there is a mutant virus, it has become more important to observe quarantine rules, such as wearing a mask, keeping social distancing, and staying at home if you are sick.”

In New Jersey, at least six cases of mutations originating from the UK are known to have been confirmed. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said the virus was identified and that the state and federal governments needed to accelerate vaccine distribution.

According to the White House, as of the 26th of this month, 308 cases of mutant infections originating from the UK were counted in 26 US states.

“The recently identified mutant viruses appear to spread more easily and can increase the number of patients and increase the burden on the healthcare system as they become more contagious,” said Rochelle Wallensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The UK mutation is known to be 50% more contagious than the existing virus. Anthony Pouch, director of the National Institute for Allergic Diseases and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), said that Pfizer and Modena’s COVID-19 vaccine, currently approved by the FDA for emergency use, appears to be effective against a mutation from the UK.
