The finished product disappears? ‘Lipstick is like coffee’… Make and apply every morning

In the future, the scenery of a dressing table filled with lipsticks may be different. Instead of multiple lipsticks, there is a machine that blends colors, and it instantly manufactures and applies lipsticks to suit the weather, complexion, and outfit every morning.

Isn’t it a story too far away Not like that. L’Oreal’s Yves Saint Laurent is expected to launch a home lipstick device to consumers this spring, and Amorepacific launched an artificial intelligence (AI)-based instant lip color manufacturing service at stores last summer. Shiseido, Japan, sells home appliances that instantly manufacture basic skin care products.

Will Instant Manufacturing Beauty Equipment Change the Cosmetic Industry?

At the world’s largest IT and home appliance show’CES 2021′, which was held digitally on the 11th, the core of the technology that beauty companies such as L’Oreal and Amorepacific introduced is AI-based instant manufacturing. It introduced a device that allows you to instantly manufacture and apply lipstick, foundation or basic cosmetics according to your skin condition with artificial intelligence technology.

L’Oreal released a lipstick version of’PERSO’, an AI-based home beauty device that was first unveiled last year, to consumers at this year’s CES. It is a device launched by Yves Saint Laurent, a beauty brand developed by L’Oreal, and its name is’Rouge Sur Mzur by Persono’.
It is a cylinder-shaped device with a built-in lipstick cartridge of three colors you want from red, nude, orange, and pink, and proposes thousands of customized colors by mixing colors according to the user. The device works with the app to take a picture of yourself and select the color you want to create a lipstick color that matches your skin and the color of the day’s clothing. You can apply the lipstick formulated on the spot, or you can remove only the upper part of the cylinder and apply it while carrying it. The device is expected to be sold in the US in the spring for $299 (about 320,000 won).

At last year’s CES, L’Oreal introduced a’Personal’ skincare device that instantly makes basic skincare products. The device, which is about 15 cm high and weighs about 500 g, contains the ingredients that make up basic cosmetics in a cartridge form. Users open Persona’s mobile app and take a picture of their face with a smartphone camera, and skin conditions such as wrinkles, spots, and pores are analyzed. The user can input the desired texture or moisture level, and the user’s geographic environment data such as weather, temperature, pollen, and UV index are also reflected and applied on the fly.

Japan’s Shiseido developed and commercialized a similar beauty device’Optune’ in July 2019. It is an IoT-based customized skin care system device that provides 80,000 skin care patterns by analyzing an individual’s skin condition and daily life environment. Five kinds of cosmetic liquids are contained in the device in the form of cartridges, and through a dedicated app, it analyzes environmental data such as temperature and humidity as well as skin condition and sleep pattern, and provides the optimal cosmetics for the current condition. In the case of Shiseido, this Optune device is offered to consumers for a monthly subscription of 10,000 yen (about 106,000 won).

AMOREPACIFIC also introduced instant toner and customized lip color manufacturing technology. ‘Formulaity Toner Pad Maker’ is a device that manufactures toner on-the-fly to meet skin concerns and absorbs it into a cosmetic cotton pad. Personalized skin care is possible by using ampoules containing various effective ingredients. The’Lip Factory Bi-Color Taylor’, which was introduced along with it, is not a household device, but it is similar in that it produces a customized lip color for one person on the spot. It precisely mixes various lip colors to produce products of over 2000 colors in real time. Since last summer, it has been serving customers at’Amore Seongsu’ in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul.

Personality for consumers, data for companies

Market research firm’Mintel’ predicted the personalization trend of the cosmetics industry in 2018 with the key word’my beauty, my rule’. This means that uniform rules for beauty disappear and companies must move to meet the needs of consumers to find their own unique beauty.

Personalized customized cosmetics that instantly provide cosmetics that fit my skin are gradually becoming a reality through technological innovation. This is possible with the addition of big data technology and artificial intelligence technology that analyzes vast amounts of data. Accordingly, in the future, the method of purchasing cosmetics for filling cartridges rather than cosmetics in the form of finished products is expected to become common.
Moreover, this approach is advantageous for companies as well. Once the device is brought in, consumers can continue to purchase rechargeable products, and data on consumers’ skin concerns and cosmetic selection patterns can be collected and used for new product launches. This is why customized cosmetics are attracting attention as the future food business of the cosmetics industry.
