Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, 66, was sentenced to imprisonment on charges of buying a judge on the 1st (local time). This made Sarkozy the first president in modern French history to be sentenced to imprisonment. Sarkozy was the first ever to have a president in court since the Fifth Republic in 1958. Sarkozy said it would appeal. Former President Jacques Chirac, who served as his predecessor from 1995 to 2007, was charged with embezzlement of public money while serving as the mayor of Paris and was sentenced to probation in 2011, but he was sick and did not appear in court.

The French court sentenced Sarkozy to three years in prison, including two years probation, but the French AFP news agency analyzed that the possibility of being trapped behind an iron bar is not high. Instead, it is highly likely that they will be placed under house arrest while wearing an electronic anklet for one year, excluding probation.

Sarkozy was elected in 2007 and served until 2012. As a leading candidate in the 2007 major race, he was investigated for receiving illegal political funding from Lilian Betancourt, then heir to the famous French cosmetics company L’Oreal. The investigation by French judicial authorities continued, but in 2013 he was found acquitted for insufficient evidence. However, in the process, the circumstances in which Sarkozy said to Gilbert Aziber, then Supreme Court Justice, that “if you convict him innocent, I will arrange a position as a Monaco Judge later,” was revealed this time, and Sarkozy was held back. French prosecutors caught the situation that the former President Sarkozy had made such a consultation with Judge Agiber through his attorney Thierry Erzog, using his cell phone. The French prosecutors sought four years in prison last December, and the court sentenced them to three years in prison on the 1st. Even Agiber couldn’t get the position of the Monaco judge.

The ruling is a political fatal for Sarkozy. He has been aiming for the presidential race after Emmanuel Macron’s retirement. He tried to re-election in 2012, but was defeated by Socialist candidate Francois Hollande, and in the 2017 presidential election he was eliminated from the Republican primary. As such, he suffered a fatal stain as he was recorded as the first French president to be sentenced to imprisonment. A separate investigation is also underway for Sarkozy. These include charges of receiving illegal political funds from Muamar Gaddafi, who ruled in Libya for 42 years, and violations of the 2012 Presidential Election Political Fund Act. It is a red flag for Sarkozy’s challenge for the presidential election.

Sarkozy’s strong ally is his wife, singer and model Karla Bruni, 54. In Korea, he is also famous as a singer who sang’Stand By Your Man’, which was the theme song of JTBC’s popular drama’Beautiful Sister Who Buys Good Food’. In 2018, there was also a performance in Korea. At the time, he said in an e-mail interview with the JoongAng Ilbo, “If you love him, you have to protect him.” The lyrics of the song are the same. Again, she is sending a cheering message for her husband who is in a political crisis. Bruni wrote on Instagram after the sentence that it was “a ridiculous mothership,” and that “the fight will continue, and the truth will be revealed.” Sarkozy is 166cm and Bruny is 175cm, and the difference in height between the two was also in the mouths of luxury men.

Sarkodo has been divorced twice, but Bruny’s male side is also gorgeous. He was well acquainted with musicians such as Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton, as well as actors such as Vincent Pere and famous French intellectuals such as Jean-Paul Antoine. Antoven was 19 years older than Bruni, and they lived together, but their romance became more famous when Bruni fell in love with Antoven’s son Raphael. Antovin’s son Rafael is 7 years younger than Bruni. Raphael wrote an autobiographical novel about her relationship with Bruni and published it last fall, and Antobang dismissed her son, saying, “This novel broke my heart.”

Thanks to this excitement, when Bruni first met Sarkozy and fell in love, British and American media outlets predicted that “it won’t last long.” They first met at a party held at the Elysee Palace, the Blue House in Korea, shortly after Sarkozy was elected in 2007. They married in February of the following year, three months after they met, and gave birth to a daughter in 2011. It still maintains a relatively stable relationship. In an interview with the British Guardian in 2013, Bruny said, “I’ve been famous since I was 19 anyway, and (my husband’s fame) doesn’t really touch me.” Dan said that he did not miss the days of First Lady, when his singer career had to be postponed to a subordinate rank. At the time, he drew a line to the reporter’s question, “Would you like to be a First Lady again?” “Well, the presidential race is like a kind of war, and I am not a warrior.”
