AFP news agency reported that Japan, which declared an emergency due to the rapid increase in Corona 19, held a large-scale coming-of-age ceremony in Yokohama and other places on the 11th.

In Japan this year, more than 1 million people will be 20, or adults. At this age, you can legally drink, smoke, and marry without parental approval. In commemoration of this, each region has a big coming-of-age ceremony every year.

However, recently, Japan has declared an emergency situation in the metropolitan area to catch Corona 19 and is trying to expand it. In particular, even the prime minister stepped forward to emphasize the compliance of young people with quarantine measures, but some local government organizations held a coming-of-age ceremony.

According to NHK, in Yokohama City, where about 37,000 adults are born, the number of coming-of-age ceremony venues was increased to two and a total of eight events were held, four times each. Men and women, 40% of the adult population, each dressed in suits and traditional kimonos, and flocked to the Yokohama Arena. The number of attendees has decreased by 25 percentage points from last year.

Sumida City, Tokyo, stopped holding the coming-of-age ceremony due to the declaration of an emergency, and held an event with a limited number of people, including the mayor of the ward and a few new adults, and broadcast it online. Yaizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan held a’Drive-in’ coming-of-age ceremony and 470 cars were crowded. Coming-of-age ceremony was also held in Kawasaki in southwestern Tokyo.

Although the event was held to comply with social distancing, some were not observed, and the government’s stance, which appealed for refraining from going out, was also evaluated as weak. Last week, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga told young people to follow quarantine measures, saying that more than half of the recent outbreaks in Tokyo are under their 30s.
