Jin Kyung-ho, chairman of the courier worker’s overworked countermeasures committee (the countermeasure committee), exclaimed a long sigh, saying, “I died again.”

He said, “Isn’t this a predicted accident?” he said. “If overwork is repeated so far, you don’t know what’s different from killing. Lotte Courier’s comprehensive countermeasures announced in October is to avoid the immediate showers. It was just an announcement.”

Earlier in late October, Lotte Courier announced a comprehensive measure to protect parcel workers. At the time, the countermeasures included ▲ step-by-step input of 1000 personnel for sorting ▲ support for health check-ups once a year ▲ payment of subsidies for loading and unloading personnel ▲ abolition of the penalty system for parcel delivery drivers.

However, on the morning of the 23rd, Park Amugae, a thirty-four young man from Lotte Courier, was found dead at his home in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do. According to the Task Force, Park, who was 190 cm tall and 110 kg in weight, suffered from overwork enough to lose 20 kg after six months of work.

The countermeasures committee said, “The deceased came to work at 6 o’clock every morning and worked 14 to 15 hours a day from 9 to 10 PM.” “Before his death, the usual amount was delivered over 250 cases, and as many as 380 cases per day.” Insisted.

In fact, on September 24, KakaoTalk of the deceased released by the Task Force said, “It ended at 12 o’clock yesterday (night),” and “(delivery) more than 300 (the previous day).” On December 15th, KakaoTalk also said, “Today, there are more than 300” and “It will be over at 11 pm”.

The countermeasures committee pointed out that “the deceased was suffering from excessive quantities during the recent Chuseok holiday, so he decided to hand over some of the supplies to his colleagues from next month.” He also said, “Mr. Park was not even registered for employment and was not subscribed to industrial accident insurance.”

The deceased died in an accident presumed to be overworked within half a year after he first started working as an engineer at the Sejong agency in Gwonseon, Suwon in July.

On January 13, in Ansan, Gyeonggi-do, a thirty-three-year-old worker from a post office was suddenly burned and died, and then opened only this year until March, April, May, June, July, August, October and December. Six courier workers died in accidents that were alleged to be overworked. The vast majority are 3040 generations of workers.

Lotte Courier’s position was different. In a phone call with Lotte Courier on the 24th, it said, “It is first to determine the correct cause of death” and “The police are currently analyzing the cause of death”.

Meanwhile, Lotte Courier said, “The countermeasures repeatedly insisted that it’did an unreasonable job’ through testimony, but this is different from the facts.” “The deceased delivered an average of 220 to 230 pieces. This is usually less than the average quantity.” Emphasized.

However, in response to the question,’Did you meet the survivors and express your condolences?’ Lotte Courier repeated only the answer, “In the procedure, the police investigation result comes out first.” In a police investigation, it was reported that no signs of suicide or murder were found. The police plan to conduct an autopsy to find the correct cause of death.

In addition, Lotte Courier said, “Isn’t the comprehensive measures announced in October not being applied to the site?” “We abolished the cost of loading and unloading in November. We operated a health check-up bus in December. Sorting personnel.” Regarding the input, we are currently conducting final tests in southern and eastern Seoul, and Yongin. After final discussion with the agency council, it will be implemented from next month.”

Meanwhile, the “Life Logistics Service Industry Development Act (Living Logistics Act)”, the so-called “Courier Delivery Workers Prevention Act,” to prevent overworked deaths of courier workers passed the general meeting of the National Assembly’s Land, Transport and Transportation Committee on the 24th.

The Life Logistics Act aims to prepare safety measures such as expanding the logistics infrastructure to prevent overwork of courier workers, and to change the courier business to a registered system. In addition, it includes a content that guarantees six years of request for renewal of a consignment contract and recommends writing and using a standard contract. However, in the process of discussing interests, the’classification work’, which is the key to preventing workers’ overwork, was omitted. It couldn’t change what the courier had to pay for lost or damaged goods.

“Even if the (Living and Logistics Act) bill is passed, it will only be applied after July of next year. I am worried about how many workers will be overworked in it,” said Jin Kyung-ho, chairman of the countermeasure committee. From overwork, apply immediately to the field.”
