The third coronavirus infection (Corona 19) spread, bringing down the consumer sentiment index again. The consumer sentiment index fell again after two months as awareness about the economy worsened due to the re-proliferation of the corona.

According to the’December Consumer Trend Survey Results’ released by the Bank of Korea on the 29th, the Consumer Sentiment Index (CCSI) for December recorded 89.8, down 8.1 points from the previous month.

This is because awareness of the economic and household financial situation has deteriorated as the corona spreads again. As of this month, the number of corona19 confirmed daily has reached 1,000, and the social distancing has been elevated to 2.5 steps. If it is below the threshold of 100 (average from 2003 to 2019), it means that the economy experienced by consumers is pessimistic.

The perception of the game has greatly deteriorated. The current economic judgment CSI recorded 56, down 16 points from the previous month. The future economic outlook CSI also fell 10 points to 81. The living conditions and consumption expenditure also worsened than the previous one. The CSI for the living environment forecast fell 5 points to 89, and the CSI for the consumption expenditure forecast fell 5 points to 99, respectively. Household income forecast CSI also fell 3 points to 93. This reflects the prospect that household income will decrease further in the future.

In particular, the CSI for the job search network fell 8 points to 74. The job search network CSI rose for three consecutive months since last September, but fell again this month. This is due to concerns that the recruitment door will be narrower due to the corona re-proliferation.

On the other hand, the housing price forecast CSI recorded 132, up 2 points from the previous year. It reached the highest level since related statistics were prepared in 2013. As the national apartment sales price continued to rise, the record high was rewritten.

However, the decline was slightly slower than when the consumer sentiment index (-8.8 points) in September, when the second corona spread occurred. Hwang Hee-jin, head of the Statistical Research Team of the Economic Statistics Bureau, analyzed, “As the corona situation has been prolonged, it has been adapted to some extent and has not fallen significantly.”
