American boxer Marvin Hegler, who was called the’Butcher on the Ring’ and was the undisputed world middleweight boxing champion from 1980 to 1987, has died. Age 66.

According to AFP news agency on the 14th (local time), Hegler’s wife, Kay Hegler, announced through Facebook that her husband had died in her New Hampshire home.

“I’m sorry to make a very sad announcement,” the wife wrote. “Unfortunately today, my beloved husband, Marvelous Marvin (Marvin Hegler’s nickname), died unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire.”

“My family asks us to respect our privacy in this difficult time,” he added.

Hegler, nicknamed’Marbles’, left a record of 62 wins (52 KOs), 2 draws and 3 losses from 1973 to retirement in 1987.

His middleweight championship match against Thomas Hearns at the Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in 1985 is sometimes referred to as’The Battle of the Century’. At that time, Hegler defeated Hearns in the third round.

Hegler retired at the age of 32 after losing a game against Sugar Ray Leonard in 1987.

In 1993, he entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame, and after retirement, he worked as an actor and boxing commentator.
