The Blue House silently on pardon on the date of confirmation of Park Geun-hye’s 20-year sentence

Former President Park Geun-hye (69) was sentenced to 22 years in prison. The third part of the Supreme Court (Presidential Judge Roh Tae-ak) confirmed the court trial, sentenced to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of 18 billion won at a reconsideration trial for former President Park on the 14th. As a result, former President Park was forced to serve a total of 22 years, plus two years in prison for the old Saenuri Party nomination charge in 2018. Since he was arrested in March 2017, he can only be released for maturity in 2039 when he turns 87 if there is no pardon or parole.

On March 10, 2017, former President Park resigned in disgrace due to the decision to impeach the President of the Constitutional Court for the first time in the history of the Korean Constitution and dismiss him, and was prosecuted the following month. The main prosecution was the allegation of complaining with Choi Seo-won (formerly Choi Soon-sil), who had been called “the real world,” and receiving bribes from Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong for horseback riding support, and forcing large companies to appear in the K-Sports and Mir Foundation. The judicial judgment on the case was ended 4 years and 4 months after JTBC’s tablet PC report, and 3 years and 9 months after the prosecution of former President Park.

The Blue House only expressed its feelings about the ruling, but did not say anything about the amnesty that drew attention. Blue House spokesman Kang Min-seok said at a briefing that “the constitutional spirit that Korea is a democratic republic is embodied” and “means the maturity and development of Korean democracy.” He said, “The unfortunate incident that led to the former president’s imprisonment should be taken as a historical lesson and this should not happen again.”

The Blue House did not make a stand when former President Lee Myung-bak was sentenced to the Supreme Court in October last year. The Supreme Court ruling on that day provided conditions for two former presidents Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye to be pardoned. However, he avoided mentioning the amnesty itself. A key member of the Blue House said, “I didn’t hear much from the president about the amnesty. It is not appropriate to comment on the amnesty as soon as the Supreme Court sentence is issued.” In the end, the answer to the controversy over the amnesty raised by Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon is expected to unfold in the order of President Moon Jae-in. President Moon’s New Year’s press conference, which is expected next week, made it inevitable for President Moon to respond directly in either direction. As for the direction in which President Moon will make a decision, positions are divided within the Blue House. The atmosphere is divided into the’premature amnesty theory’ that takes into account the backlash from the core supporters and the’amnesty inevitable theory’ that it has no choice but to come true within the term of President Moon anyway.
