The quarantine authorities announced that they would make a decision after sufficiently analyzing the vaccination results of each country regarding whether or not to expand the scope of vaccination against AstraZeneca (AZ)’s novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). Accordingly, there is a growing interest in whether elderly people 65 years of age or older, who were excluded from priority vaccination due to the controversy about the effect of vaccination for the elderly, will also be included in the vaccination target of this vaccine.
In an online briefing on the 2nd, Jung Kyung-sil, head of the vaccination management team of the Corona 19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team, said, “We are constantly collecting relevant evidence” on whether or not the elderly 65 years of age or older have received the AstraZeneca vaccine. “After analyzing this and accumulating evidence, It will be decided after receiving expert advice and deliberation by the Vaccination Specialist Committee.” Regarding the specific timing of the decision, he predicted that “we are not reviewing the data by limiting the specific time period,” and “if the data such as thesis and clinical trial results are accumulated enough, I think that I can judge it at any time.”
The government initially planned to inoculate the AstraZeneca vaccine to all hospitalized, residents and workers in nursing facilities and nursing hospitals in the first quarter, but for the first time over 65 years of age, the vaccination was withheld. This is a decision taking into account the recommendation of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety to carefully decide on the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for people 65 years of age or older. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety made this decision because the safety and effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine was proven at the time, but due to the lack of clinical studies in the elderly.
Meanwhile, a recent study in the UK supports the effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine against the elderly. As a result of a study by the England Department of Public Health (PHE) of 80 years of age or older who received this vaccine once, the number of hospitalizations after 3 to 4 weeks decreased by 80%, and the effect of preventing infection after 4 weeks of vaccination was 60 for those aged 70 or older. It was found to be ∼73%. France acknowledged the effectiveness of this vaccine based on the results of the study, and expanded the vaccination age to 74 years, and Germany is also reconsidering its policy of “not recommending AstraZeneca vaccination to the elderly”.
“Clinical trials are currently in progress in each country, and in some countries, vaccination results for the elderly are coming out,” said Mr. Jeong. “Not only the results of the US clinical trial, but also the results of each country’s vaccination are reported as a whole. ) I will decide.”
Currently, in Korea, from the 26th of last month, the AstraZeneca vaccine is given to those under the age of 65 among hospitalized, residents, and workers in nursing facilities and nursing hospitals. Pfizer vaccination has begun.
