A forest fire in Yeoryang-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do, has been continuing for the second day.
On the 21st, when the sun rose, the forest authorities put 14 extinguishing helicopters into Mount Nochu on fire. The goal is to catch the big fire by 10 am. Currently, the evolution rate is around 80%, and flames are sporadicly observed only at the top of the mountain.
The Forest Service estimates that 12㏊ of national forests were burned with this fire. It is the same area as 17 soccer fields. Until now, no human or property damage has occurred.
The forest fire occurred around 3:50 pm on the 20th. When the fire broke out, 11 helicopters including 3 extra-large helicopters and 5 large helicopters by the Forest Service, 212 people including aerial and special extinguishers, public officials, firefighters, and police, and 16 equipment such as fire fighting vehicles were put into action.
However, the fire site was a steep slope where it was almost impossible to put manpower into it, and it was difficult to extinguish due to a strong wind of 6.2 meters per second. The forest fire expanded to the top of the mountain along the’V’-shaped valley.
As the sun went down, the extinguishing helicopter was withdrawn, and ground personnel and equipment were used to create a diffusion barrier and converted to a night extinguishing system. In particular, special and aerial extinguishing teams entered the scene of the forest fire and fought the fire, and the fire line was no longer expanded. Residents had to stay awake all night watching the soaring red flames.
The forest authorities will assume that the fire has started in the farmland near the private house and will investigate the exact cause of the fire as soon as it is extinguished. An official from the Forest Service emphasized that “if the perpetrators of forest fires are arrested, they will be punished severely.”
