Pope Francis declared that the Syrian civil war, which marks its 10th anniversary on the 14th (local time), is the worst humanitarian crisis and emphasized that it should accelerate the restoration of peace in Syria.

A peaceful protest that began in March 2011 against the dictatorship of President Bashar al-Assad, joining the wave of’Arab Spring’ in the Middle East at that time, marked the beginning of the crisis in Syria. As Syrian government forces bloodshed down the peace protesters, the civil war expanded.

Since the outbreak of the civil war, 388,000 people have died so far, and more than 200,000 people have been missing or the whereabouts have been unclear.

Pope Francis appealed to the congregation at St. Peter’s Square that day, “all parties in the dispute must show goodwill so that a ray of hope can be opened to the weary (Syrian) people.”

The Pope emphasized, “Especially the vulnerable groups, including children, women and the elderly in Syria, suffered all forms of violence and tremendous suffering.”
