On the 22nd Tesla order page, the button to select the standard range among model Y trim selections disappeared. The top trim, Long Range and Performance, is still available for purchase.

It is reported that the Model Y standard range selection button has disappeared from all purchase pages worldwide from the 21st. Tesla Korea said, “It is true that the sale of the Model Y standard range trim has been discontinued at the moment,” and said, “The cause is being investigated because it has been completely decided by the global headquarters.” He added, “It has not been decided whether it is a temporary or permanent suspension.”

In particular, controversy is expected as it has not been decided whether to deliver vehicles to customers who have already ordered the standard range. In the worst case, even customers ordering may not receive the vehicle.

On the 12th, Tesla Korea confirmed the prices of the 2021 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y and started accepting orders. In the case of the Model Y standard range, the price was set at 59.9 million won, which is less than 60 million won, and it became the highest among the three trims as it was able to receive 100% of the government’s eco-friendly car subsidy. As orders are plunging, the delivery time of the Model Y standard range is predicted in the second half of this year.

Long range (69.99 million won) and performance (79.99 million won) trim can only receive half a subsidy for less than 90 million won.

In the industry, analysis shows that vehicle defects had an impact on why the standard range sales ceased. It is reported that Tesla has also been investigated by the Chinese government for customer complaints due to abnormal acceleration, battery fire, and car soft update problems in China. It took time to solve this problem and stopped selling some of the trims for the Model Y.

In addition, the increase in demand for the Model Y standard range trim is also a reason for the discontinuation of sales. INSIDEEVs, a media specialized in electric vehicles, said, “As the demand for Model Y is concentrated in the standard range, it has disrupted production of batteries and powertrains for other models, and as a result, it can affect Tesla’s profits.”

Some point out that Tesla’s unexpected discontinuation of some car models could lead to loss of credibility in the market and diminishing influence. An industry insider said, “If customers who have already ordered and stopped selling without any explanation for the model that have already started ordering cannot receive the vehicle, it can be a big blow to the corporate image.” Considering that options are expanding, Tesla may have a narrower position in the electric vehicle market in the future.”
