Tesla subsidy cut… Will the EV market be reorganized?

◀ Anchor ▶

The government has confirmed this year’s environmentally friendly vehicle subsidy reorganization plan, with the content that the government does not provide subsidies for electric vehicles exceeding KRW 90 million.

Electric vehicle subsidies over 60 million won are also cut in half, which seems to have an impact on Tesla’s soloism, which has swept the domestic market.

Reporter Lee Yoo-kyung will deliver the changed subsidy and the outlook for the electric vehicle market this year.

Tesla’s model Y, first unveiled in Korea last week.

It is an entry-level SUV following the Model 3, and it has gained great popularity in the United States.

Interest is domestic selling price.

As expected, the subsidy for this model will be cut in half when it is released for more than KRW 60 million.

“(Model Y) is a car I can dream of if it is less than 60 million won, and if it is more than that, it will be a little burdensome, so I don’t think there will be any merit.”

According to the subsidy for electric vehicles confirmed today by the government, vehicles under 60 million won are paid in full, but 50% between 60 million won and 90 million won, and more than 90 million won are not supported at all.

Last year, Tesla sold close to 12,000 units in Korea. In the case of the model 3 long range, which sold the most, the government subsidy was reduced from 8 million won to 3.41 million won.

On the other hand, Hyundai Motor Company Kona and Kia Motors Niro, which are less than 60 million won, receive 8 million won.

The intention is to provide more subsidies to popular vehicles and reduce support for expensive luxury cars.

“It could be a promotion measure to help automakers lower the price of popular electric vehicles, and it also has this advantage of encouraging the use of low-end electric vehicles to the public.”

Accordingly, it is highly likely that the prices of electric vehicles scheduled to be released this year will be set according to the changed subsidies.

In addition, Tesla’s solo run, which received more than 40% of the subsidy last year, is likely to take some brakes.

In the first half of this year, Hyundai Motor Company is planning to release Ioniq 5, which was produced on an electric vehicle platform for the first time, and Kia Motors is also preparing a new electric vehicle.

US and European companies are also planning to launch new cars using dedicated platforms, so the electric car market is expected to get even hotter this year.
