When the government decided to accelerate the vaccination period for the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) for kindergartens, daycare centers, and elementary school 1st and 2nd grade teachers, the education community is responding that it is welcoming. Education groups that have insisted on teacher-first vaccination for the purpose of expanding school and for student safety are insisting that the target be expanded to all teachers.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the 15th, from next month, personnel in charge of special education and childcare for children with disabilities and health teachers in kindergartens, elementary, middle and high schools will receive the AstraZeneca vaccine. In June, school staff, including kindergartens, daycare centers, and elementary school 1st and 2nd grade teachers, also start vaccinating. There are a total of 555,000 people who are eligible for priority vaccinations who work at school or are engaged in caring.

Initially, the vaccination for faculty and staff was scheduled to be administered after July, but it was accelerated as concerns about infection increased due to the expansion of school classes. In the education world, since the Ministry of Education announced a policy to expand school attendance classes in the new semester, there have been constant demands for teacher vaccination. Because of the caring gap, it was decided to go to school every day in kindergarten and the first and second graders of elementary school, raising concerns about infection. In fact, in the U.S., 28 out of 50 states as of the 11th of last month gave priority to teachers.

The education community is welcoming to the government’s decision, but there are voices that the inoculation should be expanded to all teachers. Seoul Superintendent Jo Hee-yeon said in a statement that day, “It is fortunate that the 2nd quarter vaccination implementation plan includes health teachers, kindergartens, and 1st and 2nd graders of elementary school. It is also necessary to consider the first vaccination.” The Federation of Teachers’ Unions also stressed that “because kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school teachers are in direct contact with a large number of students, all teachers should be given an opportunity to receive vaccination.”

Some argue that the timing of vaccinations for teachers should be accelerated. Cho Sung-cheol, a spokesman for the Federation of Korean Teachers’ Associations (KFTU), said, “It is a pleasure to receive the priority vaccination required by teachers in the field. I hope that the teacher vaccination will be done sooner.” Han Sang-yoon, chairman of the Korean Elementary School Principals’ Council (teacher Bong Eun-cho), said, “After the start of the new semester, we are trying to reduce the density of students, but there are limitations.” Insisted.
