Taiwanese computer maker Acer was threatened to release 50 million dollars (about 56.5 billion won) after ransomware attack, local media such as Bin Fruit News reported on the 21st.

Reville, who launched the ransomware attack this time, is known as “Sodinokibi,” and is known to have requested a large amount of money to prevent data leakage after hacking key data from Acer.

Ransomware is a compound word of ransom, which means’ransom’ and software, and is a malicious program that deliberately locks the system or encrypts data so that the device cannot be used.

According to reports, these groups previously asked Acer for money last week, saying, “Do not step on the train where Solarwinds in the United States was hacked and many government ministries and businesses have been damaged. However, when Acer did not respond to the request, it was reported that Acer’s financial statements and bank cash balances were released on the dark web, which can be accessed only with a specific browser.

Accordingly, Acer reported the case to national law enforcement agencies and requested assistance, and the authorities are currently undertaking a full-scale investigation. The attack occurred while Acer participated in various government projects and was receiving great attention, the Bin Fruit Daily reported.

Some media reported that the incident occurred at overseas branches such as North America and Europe, not at Acer’s Taiwan headquarters. In Taiwan, last year, Honghai Precision Industries, the world’s largest electronic product OEM (original equipment manufacturer), famous as an iPhone consignment manufacturer, as well as notebook PC manufacturers Compal and Advantech, were attacked by ransomware.
