The results of the appeal against former STX Chairman Kang Deok-soo, who was sentenced to three years in prison in 2015 and four years probation on charges of fraudulent support and fraudulent accounting for affiliates, were confirmed in the Supreme Court.

The second division of the Supreme Court (Presiding Judge Kim Sang-hwan) announced on the 8th that it confirmed the court case in the appeal of Chairman Kang, who was charged with violating the law (embezzlement) on specific economic crimes, etc.

Chairman Kang Jeon was convicted in 2014 on charges of unfairly providing 284.1 billion won in subsidiaries’ funds to private companies, receiving 900 billion won in fraudulent loans in fraudulent accounts of 2.3 trillion won, and issuing corporate bonds worth 1.75 trillion won.

The first trial admitted a charge of 584.1 billion won in fraudulent accounting charges and sentenced him to six years in prison.

However, the second trial court reduced the sentence to three years in prison, four years probation, and 160 hours of social service, considering the charges of former Chairman Kang receiving a fraudulent loan with false financial statements made through fraudulent accounting. The judiciary said that the evidence that Chairman Kang’s collusion with the accountants was not recognized, and that the reported circumstances were not revealed.

However, the amount of embezzlement and dismissal increased at the appeal trial. STX Construction was convicted of unfair support (displacement) of 23.1 billion won in the guise of pre-payment for construction costs, and increased from 6.75 billion won recognized by the first trial to 90 billion won.

The Supreme Court said, “If you look at the reasons for the court judgment in the light of the relevant jurisprudence and legally adopted evidence. “There is no,” he said, dismissing both the appeals of former chairman Kang and prosecutor.

The Supreme Court also maintained the results of the appeals court sentence of probation or innocence against the five former and current executives of STX Group who were prosecuted together with former STX Chairman Kang. Former Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy Lee Hee-beom, former chairman of STX Heavy Industries, was convicted of the same innocence as the lower court.
