[기계신문] The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is promoting the development of technology and application products for high value-added recycling of spent batteries that are expected to increase in the future.

Batteries that have been used for a certain period of time in electric vehicles (EVs), etc., are expected to be applied to other fields such as ESS (Energy Storage System) and streetlights to increase the utility value.

However, since it has been used for a long time in various environments, the difference in performance and safety may be large, so it is necessary to prepare an appropriate evaluation plan to secure product reliability.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to provide a total of KRW 13 billion in national expenditure for four years from 2021 to develop performance and safety evaluation technology and mobile application products, and develop and demonstrate MWh-class ESS technology.

An official from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said, “Through this project, we plan to establish standards for evaluation and use of batteries after use, and support the development of various and safe product lines using batteries after use, and to support efficient recycling of batteries after use and securing related companies’ competitiveness. ”
