Last year, in E-Mart’s product sales ranking, strawberries ranked fourth after wine, ramen, and beer. The strawberry sales ranking rose five places from 2018 (9th) and one place from 2019 (5th). Last year, strawberries sold more than milk.
In December last year, E-Mart’s fruit sales accounted for over 30% of strawberries. Citrus fruits (14.3%) in second place, and grapes (11.7%), thanks to the popularity of Shine Muscat (a type of green grape with high sugar content).
The distribution industry sees that strawberries are the secret of their popularity because they do not have a peel, so they are easy for consumers to eat and can be used in various ways. According to E-Mart, Shine Muscat’s sales increased more than 90% last year from a year ago. On the other hand, sales of apples and pears, which are commonly eaten peeled, declined by about 10% last year.
The distribution industry reports that the increase in home baking, which makes cakes at home due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19), also affected the sales of strawberries. Recipes that use strawberries as cake decoration or combine the sweetness of the cake with the sweet and sour taste of strawberries are also popular.
Strawberry varieties have also diversified. According to E-Mart, sales of premium strawberry varieties such as King’s Berry, Geumsil, Arihyang, Janghee, and Jukhyang increased a lot last year. E-Mart also introduced Mary Queen strawberries as a new variety this winter. E-Mart explained that it is sweeter and less sour than regular strawberries, so consumers with young children prefer it.
