[스포티비뉴스=고봉준 기자] When SK Group first entered the KBO League, it dates back to January 2000. In the aftermath of the financial crisis at the time, the Ssangbangwool Group was under court management, and the SsangBangwool Raiders Baseball Team, which had been in operation since 1990, was also at a crossroads.

Eventually, the Ssangbangwool Group announced to the KBO that it could no longer run a baseball team, and the KBO League, which was operated with an eight-club system, faced a crisis of despair ahead of the millennium era.

At this time, the company that emerged as a relief pitcher was SK Group. In January 2000, SK Group Chairman Son Gil-seung made an announcement to KBO that he would “acquire the Ssangbangwool baseball team and participate in professional baseball”. After filing an application for membership in February, the formation of the SK baseball team was unanimously approved at the extraordinary general meeting of the owners in March. In this way, SK Wyverns was born, based in Incheon.

SK, which chose the form of re-founding, suffered pain in the process of absorbing the members of Ssangbangol. Most of the squad and the front were hired, but some coaches had to leave the squad as coach Kang Byung-cheol took over as the new command tower. In addition, as the situation of the Korean Professional Baseball Players Association at that time overlapped, there was hard pain over the remaining players.

After these difficulties, SK reorganized the squad with the main players such as Kim Won-hyung and Choi Tae-won, and then naturally cut off from the history of the two sides. As the parent company changed and the place of connection moved from Jeonju to Incheon, Ssang Bang-ul’s 10-year footsteps disappeared into history. SK also reinforced the image of the new club by setting the starting point of the club in 2000.

After that, SK went on a turbulent road. In 2003, led by Cho Bum-Hyun, it was the first to advance into the Korean Series since its foundation, and from 2007 to 2012, followed by Kim Seong-geun and Lee Man-soo, he entered the Korean Series six times in a row and established a golden tower of winning three times. In addition, in 2018, directed by Trey Hillman, he reached the top of the 4th Korean series.

And this year, 20 years later, SK decided to sell the baseball team. The reason for leaving is numerous, but the Shinsegae Group instead of SK decided to continue the name of the baseball team based in Incheon.

Now, the concern is whether SK’s history is cut off. If Shinsegae Group breaks with the existing history of the two-ball baseball team like SK in 2000, the SK dynasty will disappear into history.

Of course, you can take the opposite route. Given that SK has established itself deeply in Incheon and has established a prestigious position unlike Ssangbangul, the possibility of carrying the history of the dynasty as it is cannot be excluded.

How will SK’s 21-year track record through the turbulent 2000s and 2010s?
