At the hearing on industrial accidents held at the National Assembly on the 22nd, 9 CEOs of large corporations, including POSCO Chairman Choi Jeong-woo, attended as witnesses. The lawmakers agreed that the causes of industrial accidents should be resolved and preventive measures should be taken. However, some pointed out that the purpose of the hearing was faded by a single-colored questionnaire.

The National Assembly’s Environment and Labor Committee held a hearing on the same day at a hearing on 9 areas in the fields of construction (GS E&C, POSCO E&C, Hyundai E&C), manufacturing (POSCO, LG Display, Hyundai Heavy Industries), and parcel delivery (CJ Korea Express, Coupang Full-filment Service, Lotte Global Logistics). Called the corporate CEO as a witness.

The ruling and opposition lawmakers stressed that the hearing was not a place to confront the Witnesses, but when the inquiry began, they continued to speak blasphemously. Lim Jong-seong, a member of the Democratic Party, said to foreigner Joseph Nathan, CEO of Coupang Full Filment Service (CFS), “Is Korean available? The Korean representative must also speak Korean.” Democratic Party lawmaker Roh Woong-rae also insisted on preferential employment of the son of President Choi, regardless of the subject of the hearing. Democratic Party lawmaker Yoon Mi-hyang described POSCO as’hell’, and insisted on Chairman Choi, “Isn’t the laborer the role of a grim reaper going into hell?”

The CEOs bowed their heads again and promised to prevent recurrence of industrial accidents. Chairman Choi said, “I am very sorry for causing concern to the people of the people due to the recent successive industrial accidents.” The CEO of CFS Nathan apologized for the worker who died after working at the distribution center, saying, “I would like to express my deep apology and consolation.”

The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced that as a follow-up measure of the Severe Accident Act, “the current Occupational Safety and Health Headquarters is first established by expanding the organization in charge of occupational safety and health, and after expanding functions and organizations, we are pursuing a plan to independently launch as an external agency.” There is a need for productive discussions to reduce industrial accidents in the economy, but there are many voices concerned that the embarrassment hearing hearings by calling CEOs to the National Assembly will become regular.
