South African researchers said on the 3rd (local time) that the mutation of the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) that originated in South Africa has been shown to have a net function of better protection from other corona 19 mutant viruses.

According to AFP, a new study found that people infected prior to mutation 501Y.V2 from South Africa had better immunity to other mutations.

This created hope that creating a vaccine based on South African mutation could protect against future mutations.

The mutation from South Africa confirmed at the end of last year led the wave of secondary infection locally and delayed vaccination this February.

However, the scientists said that plasma extracted from a person infected with the mutation on the 3rd had “good neutralizing (antibody) activity,” and that the targets also included the’primary infection wave’ virus and potentially other variants of concern.

When the antibodies were tested in the original mutation and in other Brazilian mutations, “the results showed a clear sense of direction,” virologist Tulio de Oliveira said at a video conference.

South African Health Minister Zwelly Mkize, at the same meeting, explained that the discovery was “good news for all,” and that it is a great help in controlling the pandemic.

Some of the corona mutations were more contagious, adding cold water to global vaccination activities. This is because the existing vaccines were found to be less effective against them.

Pharmaceutical manufacturers have been competing to change vaccine manufacturing formulas in recent weeks against the spread of new mutations.
