POSCO Chairman Jeong-woo Choi once again apologized for the death of an industrial accident.

The direct cause of safety accidents was pointed out as obsolete facilities, and promised again to create an accident-free workplace by expanding facility investment in the future.

POSCO Chairman Jeong-Woo Choi attended a hearing on industrial accidents of the National Assembly Environment and Labor Committee at 10 am on the 22nd and said, “I deeply apologize for the subsequent safety accidents.” I apologize.”

He stepped out of the witness stand in the middle of his speech and bowed his head twice.

Chairman Jeong-woo Choi admitted that even though he is working on safety accidents, it is still insufficient.

Chairman Choi emphasized, “The company is making efforts to invest in facilities with the goal of putting safety first, but it seems that there is still a lot of lack thereof.”

As for the cause of the accident, old facilities and insufficient supervision were pointed out.

Chairman Choi said, “There are many facilities that are over 50 years old in POSCO Steelworks,” and “It seems that old facilities and careless supervision by supervisors are the cause of the accident.”

On this day, Rep. Kim Ung, the Power of the People, pointed out the current status of POSCO’s industrial accidents.

According to Congressman Kim, a total of 19 deaths occurred in POSCO since 2018. Of these, 14 employees accounted for the majority of employees of partner companies.

Some point out that POSCO’s direct-managed employees are placed in safe workplaces and partner companies’ employees work in hazardous facilities, as the proportion of accidents is large.

“The production is directly managed by POSCO, and other incidental matters outside of production are outsourced.” Explained.

He answered that it was not true to the point that there has never been an industrial accident-related board of directors in the last 10 years.

Chairman Jeong-woo Choi explained, “At the board of directors held in 2019, we raised and discussed industrial accidents as an agenda,” and said, “The board of directors is checking and reporting safety risks for each investment.”

Regarding POSCO’s investment of 1.3 trillion won in countermeasures against safety accidents over the past three years, he said, “I think there was some effect.”

On the 8th of this month, a death accident occurred in POSCO’s Pohang Works in which an employee of a partner company who was replacing equipment and machinery was caught in a jam. Accordingly, Chairman Jeong-woo Choi visited the accident site at the raw material pier of Pohang Works on the 16th and apologized to the bereaved family and the people.

Meanwhile, at the hearing on that day, POSCO Chairman Choi Jeong-woo, Han Sung-hee, POSCO E&C representative, Han Young-seok, Hyundai Heavy Industries representative, and Jung Ho-young LGDisplay Representative, Woo Moo-Hyun GSRepresentatives of Construction, Lee Won-woo, CEO of Hyundai E&C, Park Chan-bok, CEO of Lotte Global Logistics, and Notman Joseph Nathan, CEO of Coupang Full-filment Service, also attended as witnesses.

Notman Joseph Nathan, CEO of Coupang Full Filment Service, said, “I deeply apologize and consolation to the deceased and the bereaved in relation to late Jang Deok-jun, who died after working at Chilgok Logistics Center in Gyeongbuk.

Pointing out that there are many disapproval of industrial accidents, “I think I have done my best to support the employees well and receive appropriate recognition of industrial accidents.” But, as I did not know the specific figures for disapproval, I will try to improve the situation in consideration of these points. He emphasized.

Hyundai Heavy Industries CEO Han Young-seok also apologized for the subsequent safety accidents.

President Han said, “I am very sorry to the people for the recent occurrence of a lot of major accidents,” and said, “I express my sincere regret for the spirit and spirit of those who died in industrial accidents.

“At our site, there are many non-standard jobs that deal with heavy objects. Therefore, we always induce standard jobs. There are still many workers who behave unsafely, so they are more carefully managed and safer. I will create a workshop.”
