Completeness evaluation such as material uniformity and defects on 12-inch wafers required by large semiconductor companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix Semiconductor has become possible in Korea.

The Ministry of Science and Technology Information and Communication completed the construction of a 12-inch semiconductor test bed (hereinafter referred to as 12-inch test bed) at the Nano Advanced Institute of Technology (Director Jo-won Lee, hereinafter referred to as Ki-won Jong) for the first time in Korea, and provided official services to domestic industry, academia, and research users from the 17th. It was announced on the 16th that it will be promoted.

Materials and parts for semiconductor production are representative items that aroused awareness of the technological independence of materials, parts, and equipment (hereinafter referred to as director) in Korea according to Japanese export regulations in July 2019.

Even before Japanese export regulations, domestic semiconductor subsidiaries had many difficulties in obtaining the evaluation results required for delivery to large companies because there was no 12-inch test bed similar to the production environment of large companies in Korea.

Accordingly, most SMEs were inevitably satisfied at the level of basic evaluation using overseas test beds or using Jongkiwon’s 8-inch equipment, spending a lot of time and money.

In order to solve these problems, the Ministry of Science and ICT designated Jong Ki-won as a 12-inch test bed operating institution for the semiconductor subsidiary in August 2019, and invested a total of KRW 45 billion to build a clean room and core equipment, and to stabilize equipment from the 17th. The official service was launched.

40nm patterned wafer

In the future, domestic semiconductor subsidiary companies will be able to quickly receive support for performance tests of semiconductor core materials using Jong Ki-won’s 12-inch test bed, which will significantly reduce the time and cost required to become a sub-manager in the semiconductor field. .

Jo-won Lee, director of Ki-Won Jong, said, “Currently, the 12-inch test bed is an infrastructure capable of manufacturing 40nm pattern wafers, and we plan to focus on supporting semiconductor core materials (photoresist, etc.) and equipment development. We plan to build additional equipment and develop process technology.”

Bong-soo Kim, Basic Source Research Policy Officer of the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “The semiconductor industry is a key industry that accounts for 20% of the nation’s exports. “The Ministry of Science and ICT will continue to push forward with efforts to expand investments and advance functions for high-level infrastructure support in parallel with basic and source research support for the development of the semiconductor field in the future.”
