SKT commercializes 5GX edge… Opening the era of ultra-low latency

[아이뉴스24 김문기 기자] SK Telecom is about to commercialize 5G mobile edge computing (MEC).

SK Telecom (President Park Jeong-ho) announced on the 24th that it will commercialize Amazon Web Service (AWS) and’SKT 5GX Edge’, a 5G edge cloud service.

‘SKT 5GX Edge’ is a service that applies AWS Wavelength to 5G MEC infrastructure, and helps customers to build ultra-low latency mobile applications in earnest.

By using this service, when an application connects to the cloud, it quickly connects to the’Wave Length Zone’ at SK Telecom’s communication office without going through the Internet or regional integration sites. Customers and developers will be able to showcase innovative services related to machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT), video games, and streaming in the same development environment as AWS’s existing services.

SK Telecom and AWS operated the first AWS Wavelength Zone in Korea in Daejeon, and plan to continue expanding infrastructure in other regions such as Seoul next year.

Earlier, the two companies have been collaborating continuously to link AWS Wavelength with actual commercial services based on SKT’s 5G network since last February, and have improved their technological maturity through demonstration projects with 20 customers.

For example, we are conducting tests to apply 5G MEC to delivery services using elegant brothers running the delivery app’People of Delivery’ and the delivery service using the outdoor autonomous delivery robot’Delidrive’, and robotics company Robotiz and autonomous driving robots. Efforts have also been made to improve the stability and remote control efficiency of autonomous robots by conducting related tests.

It has signed a business agreement with Shinsegae I&C and Max to build AR navigation and guidance services at COEX Starfield. In addition, it is collaborating with Deep Fine, an industry support solution developer based on AR glass, and Davio, which provides indoor location recognition-based services.

Meanwhile, SK Telecom is working with NIPA to open an open lab that develops immersive content optimized for 5G, and is also focusing on expanding related ecosystems.

In addition, through collaboration with Lux Seed Labs, which is equipped with eye tracking and real-time brainwave data analysis technology, the Busan Metropolitan Elderly Care Center is discussing ways to utilize 5G MEC.

In order to create new value by applying the ultra-low delay characteristics of 5G to the existing industry, Seedronix, which establishes a shipping monitoring and support system for ports, and Gint, an agricultural technology startup, provide real-time two-way communication between autonomous driving vehicles and the surrounding environment. We are demonstrating the skills we can do.

Meanwhile, cooperation in the rapidly increasing non-face-to-face service field is also actively progressing. The two companies have collaborated with Gurumi, a developer of remote video conferencing solutions, to build an environment where interactive meetings and remote classes can be held without delay, and have implemented a low-latency service of less than 100 milliseconds (ms) for multiple users.

“SK Telecom plans to take the lead in discovering and spreading innovative models for each industry such as games, media, distribution, and manufacturing by combining private 5G and edge cloud through collaboration with AWS,” said Yoo Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom’s MNO business.
