SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics, and Kakao will jointly develop an artificial intelligence (AI) service to overcome the Corona 19 pandemic and unveil it in the first half of the year.

AI will provide personalized services, such as predicting and warning the risk of moving paths around users and future routes. It is expected to be the first joint product of information and communication technology (ICT) cooperation between the three companies.

The three companies plan to expand cooperation to all areas of ICT, including not only AI cooperation, but also convergence of capabilities and business areas secured by each company such as 5th generation (5G) mobile communication, smartphone, and messenger platforms. It is expected to have significant ripple effects such as differentiation as well as enhancing competitiveness in all areas of ICT, including AI.

SK Telecom, Samsung Electronics, and Kakao signed a’Partnership for AI Joint Research’ to contribute to the public interest and expand the AI ecosystem on the 22nd.

The three companies will combine the core competencies of each company to develop △ future AI technology development △ study how to use AI to solve social difficulties △ expand the base of AI technology.

First, we will cooperate with a focus on early coping with Corona 19 and AI development for public good. To this end, the three companies also formed the’AI Research and Development (R&D) Council’. In the council, the chief technology officer (CTO) of each company or the executive level specialized in AI participates and promotes joint development. In the future, it plans to expand the scale to the level of the global AI alliance (alignment) by participating other domestic operators.

The’Pandemic Overcoming AI’, which the three companies will release in the first half of the new year, identifies the risk situation of Corona 19 around the current location in real time, analyzes the risk level, and recommends social distancing to users or guides a detour route. It can be used in disaster situations such as typhoons and heavy rains in the future. It differentiates from the existing disaster notifications that mainly notify the occurrence of occurrence in that AI provides personalized information.

‘Ai overcoming pandemic’ precisely analyzes the risk of each region through big data of the floating population, public disaster information, and social network service (SNS) information. It provides predictive information to users based on data such as schedules recorded on smartphones, flight tickets, performances, accommodation reservation information, and normal travel routes.

In addition, general-purpose AI technology including Korean language model is applied to’Ai overcoming Pandemic’. AI will analyze news, summarize and deliver the information users want, or evolve to understand various disaster-related information requests and provide appropriate answers.

The three companies will develop’Pandemic Overcome AI’ in the form of’Backend AI Platform’. Core functions and technologies are open to the public such as developers, research institutes, and companies in the form of an application program development environment (API).

It is a form that supports application (app) and service development to external companies. The API will be released on a separate site operated by the three companies in the first half of the year.

The three companies plan to continue cooperation in AI research to solve social difficulties such as social aging and fine dust, starting with’AI overcoming pandemic’.

Kakao Co-CEO Yeo Min-soo said, “We will work closely to solve social difficulties. We will solve social problems with technology.”

Yoo Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom’s MNO project, emphasized that “the initial AI cooperation of leading domestic ICT companies will contribute to the establishment of the Korean social safety net.”

Samsung Electronics President Roh Tae-moon said, “The cooperation between the three companies is a project that contributes to the growth of the domestic AI ecosystem in the long term by providing basic technology components that are widely used in industry and academia.”
