SK Global Chemical, a subsidiary of SK Innovation’s petrochemical business, and POSCO decided to cooperate in the development of lightweight new materials for future mobility such as electric vehicles.

The two companies announced on the 8th that they have signed a business agreement to develop lightweight composite materials for vehicles at the POSCO Center in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The signing ceremony was attended by POSCO President Kim Hak-dong and SK Global Chemical President Na Gyeong-soo.

The two companies are planning to research and develop steel and plastic composite materials that share the production and processing technology of plastic materials and steel materials, and have characteristics that are lighter and harder than existing vehicle parts.

In particular, it plans to review research and development on composite materials that can be applied to the production of battery packs for electric vehicles, plastic materials that maximize adhesion with steel materials, and materials for vehicle parts that have high resistance to external shocks, such as automobile frames.

POSCO President Hak-dong Kim said, “We will prepare for the future eco-friendly car era by joint development with other materials such as plastics as well as steel-based vehicle materials.”

SK Global Chemical President Na Gyeong-soo said, “With synergy between the two companies that are producing and processing chemical and steel materials, it is expected that the development of new vehicle materials suitable for the future car era will proceed rapidly.
