Happiness Administration·LH, selected as a university in the joint campus

On the 3rd, the Administration of Multifunctional Administrative City Construction (Happy Administration) and Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) have selected six universities to move into the 4-2 residential area (Jiphyeon-dong) joint campus site after deliberation by the Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Promotion Committee. Revealed. This is the first time that a university to move into Sejong City has been confirmed.

Considering the characteristics of Sejong City, where government ministries are concentrated, policy graduate schools tailored to the demands of national policies, etc., and IT (information and communication technology) and BT (biotechnology) convergence fields are scheduled to move in.

Five universities, including Seoul National University Graduate School, Chungnam University Medical School, Chungbuk National University Veterinary School, KDI Graduate School, and Hanbat University Graduate School, will be built on the rental campus created by LH. In addition, Gongju National University and Chungnam National University AI Graduate School will be set up on pre-sale campuses. A pre-sale campus is when a university buys land and builds a building.

Among them, Seoul National University will open joint master’s and doctoral degree programs in five administrative and policy fields, including international health, convergence science and technology, administration and environment. Chungnam National University and Chungbuk National University operate medical school, graduate school, veterinary school, and graduate school courses respectively. Along with this, the KDI Graduate School of International Public Administration and the Graduate School of Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Hanbat University will be built in the rental building.

LH is planning to start the construction of the campus within this year and open the campus simultaneously in March 2024. Gongju University and Chungnam National University AI colleges and graduate schools are expected to start construction by February 2024 and move in by 2026. The total capacity of these universities is expected to be about 2,500.

Each university is planning to finalize detailed details such as specific capacity, size, and division through a feasibility examination by the Ministry of Education. The Happiness Administration plans to create a'(tentative name) Sejong Shared University’ model in which these tenant universities jointly operate multiple degrees and convergence majors.

In the urban high-tech industrial complex (Sejong Tech Valley) where the joint campus is located, there are about 300 high-tech companies and research centers such as the Naver Data Center and the Autonomous Vehicle Research Center, which are expected to create synergy through collaboration.

“By moving in to an excellent university, we will be able to create an innovative ecosystem in which education, research, start-ups, and employment are in a virtuous cycle,” said Lim Seok-hoon, Secretary of the Urban Growth Promotion Division of the Happiness Administration. The’Joint Campus’ site was built by LH with a project cost of 200 billion won to a size of 600,000 square meters. The Happiness Administration and LH plan to provide additional 4 parcels (70,000㎡) on the pre-sale campus in the second half. The remaining space is expected to accommodate 1,500 students.
