A medium sentence was sentenced to former short track national team coach Cho Jae-beom, who was accused of routinely raping Shim Seok-hee, a Korean female sort track star.

On the 21st, the 15th Criminal Division of the Suwon District Law (President Judge Cho Hyu-ok) held a sentence of 10 years in prison and sentenced to June 10 for Mr. Cho, who was accused of violating the Act on Sexual Protection of Children and Adolescents.

The court also ordered the completion of a 200-hour sexual violence treatment program, and restrictions on employment in children and youth-related institutions and welfare facilities for the disabled for seven years.

The judge said, “As a coach of the short track national team who coached the victims, the defendant committed sexual crimes with force using the victim’s inability to protest over the years. Nevertheless, he denied the charges and did not take steps to seek forgiveness from the victims.” He revealed the reason for the sentence, saying, “The guilt is heavy and the possibility of criticism is very high.”

Jo was accused of sexual assault or forcibly harassing Shim player 30 times in seven locations, including Taereung and Jincheon athletes villages and Hanche University ice rink, from August 2014 when he was a sophomore in high school to December 2017.

The prosecution indicted the charges prior to 2016, when Cho’s crime was a high school student, for violating the Act on Sexual Protection of Children and Adolescents.

Apart from sexual crimes, Mr. Cho was handed over to trial for injuring Sim by habitually assaulting a player, and was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison at an appeals court in January 2019, and his sentence was confirmed.
