LG Chem announced on the 7th that it has signed a contract with UNICEF, an international aid organization, to supply a polio vaccine portfolio worth 80 million dollars (about 87 billion won) by next year.

With this contract, LG Chem will supply more than 20% of the total supply of UNICEF. It is explained that it is UNICEF’s top 3 polio vaccine supplier.

Eufolio is a next-generation dead vaccine that has undergone an additional process of chemically removing the pathogenicity of the virus using attenuated virus with weakened toxicity. The company explained that it is more safe than the existing live vaccine.

LG Chem received approval from the World Health Organization (WHO) at the end of last month for’PQ’, an essential screening for the supply of vaccines to international relief organizations. It is the world’s first attenuated Sabin IPV.

The company plans to sign a large-scale supply contract after PQ approval, and supply it to more than 70 countries around the world, mainly in the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia from next month.

LG Chem plans to actively contribute to solving the global children’s public health problem by doubling its production capacity by next year, resolving the supply shortage of polio vaccines.

Ji-woong Sohn, head of the life science business division of LG Chem, said, “By establishing a global cooperation model with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, we have played an important role as a major global supplier of polio vaccines. I will start developing a vaccine.”

LG Chem is currently undergoing phase 2 clinical trials of a hexavalent mixed vaccine based on the Ufolio.
