President Moon Jae-in interviews Secretary of State Tony Blincoln and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on the 18th. As this is the first high-level visit to Korea since the inauguration of U.S. President Joe Biden, it is possible to share the South Korean government’s longing for a peace process initiative on the Korean Peninsula.
According to the Blue House on the 17th, President Moon meets with Secretary Blincoln and Austin at the main building of the Blue House at 3pm on the 18th. The two ministers are scheduled to hold only ministerial-level talks on the day they visit Korea on the 17th. On the morning of the 18th, Secretary of State Blincoln will attend a meeting with Foreign Minister Eui-yong Eui-yong and ROK-US foreign ministers. The interview with President Moon is scheduled to be held after that.
At the precautionary position of President Moon, it is expected that the two countries will share the approximate diplomatic and security strategies pursued by the ROK and the United States. President Moon is likely to present to the United States a plan for the overall inter-Korean-North Korea-US relations that he wants to restore for the rest of his term. In particular, it is an analysis that even if the talk of North Korean Labor Party Vice President Kim Yeo-jeong is not directly addressed the day before, it is an opportunity to more actively highlight pending issues related to North Korea. Kim Yeo-jeong gave a talk to the Labor Newspaper of the Party’s Labor Party the day before and said, “I heard the news that the South Korean authorities are on the path to invasive war practice targeting the Republic of Korea from the 8th. It will not be easy,” he warned. Furthermore, it announced that it would dismantle the National Committee for Peace and Unification of the Fatherland (Jopyeongtong) and the Mt. Geumgang International Tourism Bureau. Some governments are also interpreting that this discourse may paradoxically indicate North Korea’s commitment to talks with the United States.
Ministers Blincoln and Austin are expected to emphasize the importance of the ROK-US alliance against China’s threat above all else. In addition, there is a likelihood of presenting a plan to improve the Korea-Japan relations as soon as possible to strengthen the Korea-US-Japan security system.
