Shortage of non-South Korean semiconductors… “Need mid- to long-term measures such as improving localization rate”

[이데일리 신중섭 기자] The global automobile industry is suffering from shortage of’vehicle semiconductors’. Domestic automakers are in a position that there are no problems yet. However, as the demand for automotive semiconductors is expected to increase due to technological advancements such as the expansion of electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles, it is pointed out that mid- to long-term countermeasures must be prepared, such as lowering the dependence of automotive semiconductors abroad.

The scale of the automotive semiconductor market by 2025 KRW 77 trillion

According to the automobile/semiconductor industry on the 22nd, global automakers are currently disrupting automobile production due to the lack of semiconductors for vehicles. Ford recently closed its Louisville, Kentucky sports utility vehicle (SUV) plant due to a shortage of semiconductors, and decided to suspend operation of its Saarlouis plant in Germany for one month until the 19th of next month. In addition, the Volkswagen Group, Chrysler, Jeep, Toyota, and Nissan all postpone production or announce plans to cut production.

The reason that automakers suddenly disrupted production due to the supply and demand of automotive semiconductors was due to the aftermath of’Corona 19′, which began last year. In the aftermath of Corona 19, operation of major automobile factories was stopped last year and the spread of non-face-to-face culture, semiconductor companies increased the production of semiconductors for information technology (IT) and electronic products such as computers and smartphones instead of semiconductors for vehicles. However, as demand for finished cars recovers faster than expected from the second half of last year, it is causing shortages in automotive semiconductors.

However, domestic automakers are in a position that there are no problems yet. It is explained that the supply and demand of parts is not urgent because it has stocks for several months in advance.

However, some experts point out that from now on, it is necessary to prepare for the shortage of supply and demand for automotive semiconductors. The short-term shortage phenomenon caused by the aftermath of Corona 19 may be resolved, but the increase in automotive semiconductor demand may be prolonged due to the expansion of electric vehicles. The semiconductors required for electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles are two or three times that of 200-400 general cars. According to market researcher IC Insights, the automotive semiconductor market (based on sales) was $ 32.3 billion in 2018 to $ 65.5 billion in 2025 (approximately 77 trillion won). ) Is expected to grow rapidly.

Internalization of semiconductors for vehicles such as Volkswagen

Experts agreed that it is necessary to lower the dependence on foreign countries for automotive semiconductors and increase the localization rate. It is said that the material, parts and equipment industry, which has been damaged by Japanese regulations, should not be repeated.

It is known that major global automakers such as Volkswagen and Toyota are in the process of internalizing power semiconductors, starting with internalizing power modules, a type of strategic semiconductor. Currently, the power semiconductor market is led by Infineon of Germany, Mitsubishi Electric of Japan, and STMicroelectronics of Switzerland.

Ahn Ki-hyun, executive director of the Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, said, “As autonomous driving, etc. are expanded due to the advancement of automobile technology, the demand for semiconductors for vehicles is expected to continue to increase.” do. He pointed out that mid- to long-term countermeasures such as lowering the dependence of automotive semiconductors abroad and increasing the localization rate are necessary.”

“Currently, 97~8% of automotive semiconductors used in our automotive industry are overseas products.” “Currently, our semiconductor industry is focused on consumer electronics and communication semiconductors such as memory and smartphones. However, both fabless (semiconductor design company) and foundry (semiconductor consignment manufacturing company) should increase the base of semiconductor technology and manufacturing for vehicles in the mid to long term.”
