On page 238 of my autobiographical novel Nolmen Nolmen, which I published in Koreawon in 1994, 27 years ago, there is a passage like this.

First part of the’subcontracting choir’ in the U.S. military church
Songs at the’Obis Cabin’ cafe in Myeong-dong

Choi Hee-jun, Hyun-mi, Patty Kim in the 8th US Army Shodan…
Audition, judges ring through two hundred thousand

“If someone asks someone who has served me as a vitamin in my youth, I will give Oh Tae-seok and two hundred thousand two people without hesitation,” it says.

I did. Tae-Seok Oh at school, 200 thousand Tollgang at Cesibong. What’s funny is that Oh Tae-seok wasn’t a music teacher, but a play coach in a group club.

As soon as I enter Seoul College of Music, I enter the school’s theater club. We decided to upload Thornton Wilder’s’Our Town’ as our first work, and the club leader Ho-geun Moon (the eldest son of Pastor Moon Ik-hwan; the eldest son of actor Sung-geun Moon; he died early while acting as an artistic director at the Seoul Arts Center) and his partner Lee Kun-yong ( Ye-jong Han became president and conductor Geum Nan-sae was also a classmate) and has invited Tae-seok Oh, who was a student at Yonsei University, as a theater coach.

As an assistant director, Oh Tae-seok has led the same solidarity as Jung Ha-yeon (later succeeded as a famous TV drama writer) and Hong-ik beauty college student Lee Doo-sik (who became Hongik beauty college president, suddenly died a few years ago) as the stage equipment and host staff, which looks exactly like the equipment of the Three Kingdoms.

Oh Tae-seok’s true appreciation was better in his writing than in the play. That point was similar to Nam June Paik. Both of them couldn’t even go near the seaside, but their writing was real. I pick two people as the best writers of my younger days. One is Lee Je-ha, a poet from Hongik Art University (the lyrics and composer of’Peony Camellia’ that I call) and Tae-seok Oh. This is because the two people’s writings were always filled with melodies and excitement.

Anyway, I wasn’t in a position to do a play (William Inge’s’Bus Stop’, Tennessee Williams”Tram named Desire’) and go out to Cessibong at that time. When I was at Hanyang University, I was not a big scholar because I was a scholarship student, but Seoul University was very different. The penny money given by the church in the name of a choir soloist disappeared, and the pastor Sejin Kim of Dongshin Church used to take pocket money that was sometimes secretly handed over. My dad has been lying down all the time since I was in middle school because of a paralysis.

Thus, the first Albanian of my life has just begun. The first Alba was to join the Pilgrim Choir led by Lee Dong-hoon, who was popular at the time. Lee Dong-hoon was the conductor of the choir of the Dongshin Church near Dongdaemun where I was attending, so I entered it easily. The Pilgrim Choir was paid more than anything else. There was a reason. This is because he took on the role of a subcontractor at the US military church in the US military base in Yongsan every week.

In the early morning of Sunday, a large U.S. bus comes to the final point in Huam-dong, picks me up, goes round and round, picks up choir members everywhere, and enters Yongsan’s 8th US Army unit. When you get off the bus, you rush into the US pastor’s room. There are dozens of tasty donuts (it was the first time I saw a hole in the bread) lying at an angle. Our members pick up one or two at a time and grab a coffee that comes out automatically when you just click right next to it and eat it deliciously. Of course I followed. But when I have to sing a chant, my belly hurts and hurts. I had a sudden diarrhea. It was really shameful to slip out and go to the bathroom during worship. I ate it again next week saying it would be okay this time, but also diarrhea. I tried until the third time, but it was in vain. I haven’t eaten donuts and coffee together until now because of the low-level constitution that I can’t drink milk ecologically.

The second alba was very peculiar as a music student. During Hanyang University, with Lee Byung-hoon and Dung Kun-ho, he sang some pop songs that he had cooked with peanuts every weekend at a music cafe called’Obis Cabin’ in Myeong-dong. Among the song gangs of Kyung Hee University, there were tenor Eom Jeong-haeng and bass Lee Jong-beom (who died early), who were close friends, whose father was the owner of the building. Jongbeom dragged me in front of my father and said, “He sings classic and pop songs well, so let’s try it!” So I got a job. On the upper floor, a group called’He6′ played loudly, and I was a performer in a cafe with an atmosphere downstairs.

Back then, there was no place like a stage. The place where I sing was when Hercules, a hero of Greek mythology, puts a microphone right under the statue that shoots a bow with her legs wide apart and sings while playing the guitar, but the problem is that when I accidentally turn my head to the left, the male symbol of Mr. Hera becomes It was less than 20cm close to my face. It was embarrassing.

Five fresh female college students used to appear there every Saturday evening, but after a while, it turns out that they were senior students of Ewha Girls’ High School. I had thickened my makeup and disguised myself as a female college student. I quickly became acquainted with them. One of them became Oh Tae-seok’s lifelong partner, and the rest left me as a wife or lover of my close friend. It was like a dog chasing chickens only for me.

No matter how much I think about it, I don’t know. I don’t like to express my need for others, but it seems that I was in a hurry to finance my tuition. Obis Cabin’s salary was always paid for my personal entertainment. When my friends came, I gave them a treat. Tollgang Lee Baek-cheon, who knows my inner situation well, took me to the head of a band called’A Train’ of the 8th US Army, head of a band called Kang Cheol-gu (saxophone player). I can’t remember what song I sang, but I’m immediately selected as an audition candidate. The meaning of candidate was the same as passing through the preliminary round, saying that he could respond to the audition held every season (quarter system). On that very day, the executive director of Hwayang Shodan (there were dozens of small shodans within the Hwayang company) asked me to choose an LP version and practice this song to receive an audition.

The day I saw the audition was bloody. It was a battlefield of death or life. The judges were all U.S. military officers. The feeling of seeing American people these days is very different from the feeling of American people that we felt at that time. In particular, the Americans in officer uniforms were terrifying. I heard it later. The song I sang at that time was a magnificent and very dramatic song with the theme song “Old Man River” of the famous musical “Show Boat,” and when I sang it, I heard that the American judges cried. .

The U.S. sent its soldiers abroad, initially digesting the consolation group on its own. Marylin Monroe (who also sang well), Nat King Cole who sang’Mona Lisa’, and Louis Armstrong, a trumpet runner, came out, but as the number of dispatches increased, celebrities were too expensive to organize local consolation groups. In Korea, the so-called 8th US Army Shodan is that. While writing this series that there were about 40 Shodans, I was able to experience the activities of the 8th Army Shodan, which was almost the same as the revolution that opened the waters of the first Western civilization since the history of this country. Singers from the 8th US Army Shodan are Sisters Kim, Heejun Choi, Mihyeonmi, and Patty Kim… , I believe that you can guess just by looking at the influence they have had on the Korean music industry. Hmm! I existed in a historical moment.

When I went to the Hwayang Shodan practice room, the performers of each band, male and female singers, and dancers gained and lost. I was lucky enough to be hired as a singer succeeding the baton of the traditional Shodan Choi Hee-jun and Wang Son singer Lee Seok (famous for the’pigeon family’) of the traditional Shodan called’A Train’, and my female partner was Yang Yang-i’s older sister. Yang Yang-i’s sister’s husband was the head of another Shodan pianist Park Seon-gil (Park Jung-woon’s father who sang’If It’s The Same Night). Director Park asked me to go to the recording studio in Jangchung-dong, so I followed him for a look, and there I met the big singers of my dreams, Choi Hee-jun, Yoo Ju-yong, Wiki Lee, and Park Hyeong-jun. At that time, it was fashionable to sing American pop songs in Korean, but mainly English-speaking talented people led the way. Director Park Seon-gil was an arranger. From that day on, I quickly became a famous foreign song producer when I was recording in the pretentious Jangchung recording studio, but when the translated Korean aquis didn’t fit well, so I could change it like this over my shoulder.

After receiving the first salary of Shodan, I quit the Seoul College of Music

I quickly came up with a stage name. It was scrap. I still don’t know why it was scrap metal. When I was young, there were scrap metal collectors who couldn’t use it, but I wonder if they felt compassion for the obsolete hardware. I have sometimes regretted not changing my name to scrap metal since then. As a rule of thumb, I wondered if Kocheol’s tune would be about five or six, but according to my LP collector (director Seung-mo Seung-mo, a spirit department near ancient times), I almost fainted because there were more than 30 songs. Of course, the extra income was salty.

It happened at the same time around that time. During the 8th US Army show audition practice, I get to know a slim female sister who looks younger than me, a trainee from another Shodan. We quickly got to know them, and we started to practice hard with a deadly plan to form a trio by ourselves and advance to the general stage. Tollgang Lee Baek-cheon, who learned of this news, said that it was good, and told him to come to the 10th floor of Dongyang Broadcasting. There was a TBC broadcasting station in the current Seosomun Jungang SUNDAY building. The three of us went to the 10th floor of the meeting place holding a guitar one by one with thrilling hearts. It was like a rest area for PDs. We sang the country folk song’Before This Day Ends’, which we had been prepared for, because Tookgang teacher asked us to sing it once. I stood in the middle, and there was a sister on each side. After ordering the song, no one, including Took-gang, gave us a glance and said, “Okay! I only heard “I’m going home.” We haven’t been contacted by Katabuta since then. That was the story of the trio of’Youngnam Cho and the Pulsisters’, the most unfortunate in the world.

After that, what I got in touch with was that my band and I had been admitted as an A-class shodan. When I open the salary envelope that came out a month later, I almost faint. It contained a large amount of 60,000 won. At that time, the tuition for one semester of music college was 65,000 won. I beat the church and even the school by that path without regret.
